Do you comply with F Gas?

Despite the fact that the deadline to comply with F Gas was last July, many operatives are still working illegally, which could see those individuals fined if they don’t gain the right qualifications.

As of July 2009 all businesses that install, maintain or service stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and/or heat-pump equipment (SRAC) that contains, or is designed to contain F-gas refrigerants must possess F-Gas certification. Last year this extended to the individual operatives who fit this equipment.

If you or your business doesn’t comply you could be subject to enforcement and prohibition notices, with penalties for less serious offences up to £5,000. Serious offences can end up in crown court where unlimited fines can be applied.

You might think that cutting corners will save money, but this will be a false economy if you get found out. Whether you’re a one man band or a large company employing a number of RAC engineers, everyone who installs, maintains or services equipment containing F-Gas must have received appropriate training.

Open day for building services companies in Luton

Logic4training is currently looking for employers to take on and/or provide support for would-be apprentices who have completed our new course, Access to Building Services Engineering, City & Guilds (C&G) 2000 – Level 1, which we are delivering in partnership with the Job Centre and Pearson in Practice.

We will be hosting an open day on the 24th May for interested businesses, starting at 12pm.

During the day, guests will be supplied with food and refreshments and given the opportunity to meet with students on the Access to Building Services programme. Following lunch, attendees will hear more about the course and how it is funded, plus an overview of the benefits to taking on a learner who has been through this training – either as an apprentice or employee. Employers will be given the opportunity to meet these candidates again if they so wish.

Access to Building Services Engineering, C&G 2000 is designed for anyone over 19 looking to work in plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilation or refrigeration and air conditioning based roles, such as installers and builders merchants. The course provides a stepping-stone onto the apprenticeship programme, giving trainees a good grounding in their chosen trade, plus general employability advice, including putting a CV together and presentation techniques.

If you would like to attend the open day, or find out more about this programme, please contact Jon Humphreys: jon.humphreys@gaslogic.com, 0845 845 7222.

July special offers – gas ACS, renewables and more!

As the kid’s summer holidays finally arrive, many of you have a welcome quiet couple of months ahead while the whole world and his wife seems to take a vacation. Why not use this opportunity to get up-to-speed with your training? The heating season will be with us again sooner than you know it and for many, that means ACS (Approved Certification Scheme) qualifications need renewing. If you’re a refrigeration and air conditioning engineer, you must make sure you’ve got the correct FGas training under your belt.

Maybe you want to add more to your offering; domestic gas engineers might want to up-skill to the commercial side of things and across the board, renewables are becoming an increasingly popular choice with this market expanding at a rapid rate.

October should see the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) for domestic applications. To take advantage of the market opportunities this will create, your company needs to be Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) approved. Our renewable installation courses are recognised by the MCS so go towards accreditation. By taking appropriate training and other necessary steps now, you can make sure that your business is ready for the increase in demand for renewable heat come the end of the year.

Our July special offers will help you get up to speed with relevant training while benefitting from reduced rates at all of our centres and on many of our courses. Current special offers are as follows:

20% off all courses* taken at our Luton centre; training must be booked by the 31st August but can be taken at any time.
20% off FGas training, from Monday 8th to the 12th August at our Basildon centre.
70% off renewables training for installers in the East of England – Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex (outside the M25), Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
• £25 off Logic4training’s working at heights course when booked in conjunction with solar thermal or solar PV courses at our Northolt centre.

First PHEX of the 2011 basks in sunshine

Logic4training has just got back from the first PHEX of the year, held at a very sunny Wembley Stadium. Unsurprisingly, renewable training courses sparked a great deal of interest, thanks the launch of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in March. Our April deal, 15% off all courses booked when you quote PHEX11, also proved popular – this is still available, until the end of the month, so don’t forget to take advantage.

While visitor numbers were slightly down on previous PHEXs’ it was still a good show. One exhibitor bemoaned the amount of students in attendance – we welcome them on the Logic4training stand – the students that visited us at PHEX nine years ago are now our customers. Catching the attentions of these young people is really important; as their careers take-off they’re more likely to come back to the service providers who were helpful to them while they were still studying.

Apart from catching up with what’s new in the plumbing and heating sector, visitors were treated to a free tour of the famous stadium, made all the more enjoyable thanks to the glorious weather.

Logic4training is now looking forward to our next PHEX, at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge on the 16th and 17th of November.

F-Gas regulations update: Time’s running out for training

Time is running out for refrigeration and air-conditioning companies affected by the F-Gas regulations. By July 4th it will be a legal requirement for those organisations working with fluorinated gases to hold a full stationary equipment company certificate. To achieve this, businesses must prove that refrigeration engineers hold a recognised industry qualification.

Logic4training delivers the City & Guilds 2079-11 course in F-Gas and Ozone Depleting Substances, necessary for meeting the regulation. Training takes place over three or five days, depending on the operatives experience and knowledge.

After July 4th, any company carrying out stationary refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump equipment work, without the appropriate certificate (either interim or full), will be committing an offence under the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2009.

F Gas from Logic4training

Logic4training now offers two City and Guild courses in F-Gas Refrigerant Handling at its Basildon centre in Essex.

Logic4training offers the City and Guilds 2079-11 Level 2 Certificate in F-Gas and ODS (Fluorinated Gases and Ozone Depleting Substances) Regulations, the minimum qualification for those working with F-Gas and ODS. The courses are held over five or three days depending on the experience of the candidate.

The five-day course is aimed at both experienced and non-experienced candidates and covers the four categories including leak checking, refrigerant recovery, service, maintenance and installation. This course covers both practical and theory training.

The three-day course is for experienced operatives only, who are familiar with pressure elthalpy diagrams, basic principals of vapour compression systems, subcooling, superheating and the practical application of refrigeration systems. This covers theory training only.

For both the five and three-day courses, the exam fee is included and each candidate will receive the CITB Safe Handling of Refrigerants training manual.

By 4 July 2011, it will be a legal requirement for those working with fluorinated gases to obtain a qualification listed within the legal regulations and for businesses to be certificated through the bodies appointed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Businesses carrying out installations, maintenance or servicing of stationary refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump equipment (SRAC work) containing or designed to contain F-Gas refrigerants must obtain either an interim company certificate or a stationary equipment qualification company certificate (full certificate).

Those carrying out SRAC work after 4 July 2009 without one or other of these certificates is committing an offence under The Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2009. The City & Guilds 2079 is an evergreen qualification, unlike other qualifications, and does not require renewal every three years.
