Open day for building services companies in Luton

Logic4training is currently looking for employers to take on and/or provide support for would-be apprentices who have completed our new course, Access to Building Services Engineering, City & Guilds (C&G) 2000 – Level 1, which we are delivering in partnership with the Job Centre and Pearson in Practice.

We will be hosting an open day on the 24th May for interested businesses, starting at 12pm.

During the day, guests will be supplied with food and refreshments and given the opportunity to meet with students on the Access to Building Services programme. Following lunch, attendees will hear more about the course and how it is funded, plus an overview of the benefits to taking on a learner who has been through this training – either as an apprentice or employee. Employers will be given the opportunity to meet these candidates again if they so wish.

Access to Building Services Engineering, C&G 2000 is designed for anyone over 19 looking to work in plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilation or refrigeration and air conditioning based roles, such as installers and builders merchants. The course provides a stepping-stone onto the apprenticeship programme, giving trainees a good grounding in their chosen trade, plus general employability advice, including putting a CV together and presentation techniques.

If you would like to attend the open day, or find out more about this programme, please contact Jon Humphreys: jon.humphreys@gaslogic.com, 0845 845 7222.

Calling all building services employers in Luton!

Calling all building services employers in Luton!

Logic4training is now offering pre-apprenticeship programmes for over 19s in the Luton area and need willing employers, in plumbing, heating & ventilating, refrigeration & air conditioning and electrical trades, to take these learners on as employees or apprentices.

The programme is based on the City & Guilds 2000 L1 Certificate in Access to Building Services Engineering and will give learners basic skills and knowledge within the plumbing, electrical, air conditioning and H&V areas, providing a first step into our industry. Basic employability skills are covered as part of the programme and candidates will have reached minimum levels in maths and English.

There are loads of benefits to taking on an apprentice, not least the fact that it gives you the opportunity to shape someone towards a way of working that suits your particular business. As these learners are over 19, they should be a bit more mature and may have more relevant experience than your average school leaver*.

With over one million young people aged between 18-24 unemployed it is vital that the building services sector takes a lead in finding meaningful employment and apprenticeships for some of these individuals.

If you’re interested in providing an apprenticeship or employment for candidates on this course, please get in touch: 0845 457 7222, enquiries@logic4training.co.uk.

The pre-apprenticeship course is being delivered in partnership with Pearson in Practice and Job Centre Plus.

*Due to their age, apprenticeships aren’t fully funded and wages will be payable by the employer.

July special offers – gas ACS, renewables and more!

As the kid’s summer holidays finally arrive, many of you have a welcome quiet couple of months ahead while the whole world and his wife seems to take a vacation. Why not use this opportunity to get up-to-speed with your training? The heating season will be with us again sooner than you know it and for many, that means ACS (Approved Certification Scheme) qualifications need renewing. If you’re a refrigeration and air conditioning engineer, you must make sure you’ve got the correct FGas training under your belt.

Maybe you want to add more to your offering; domestic gas engineers might want to up-skill to the commercial side of things and across the board, renewables are becoming an increasingly popular choice with this market expanding at a rapid rate.

October should see the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) for domestic applications. To take advantage of the market opportunities this will create, your company needs to be Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) approved. Our renewable installation courses are recognised by the MCS so go towards accreditation. By taking appropriate training and other necessary steps now, you can make sure that your business is ready for the increase in demand for renewable heat come the end of the year.

Our July special offers will help you get up to speed with relevant training while benefitting from reduced rates at all of our centres and on many of our courses. Current special offers are as follows:

20% off all courses* taken at our Luton centre; training must be booked by the 31st August but can be taken at any time.
20% off FGas training, from Monday 8th to the 12th August at our Basildon centre.
70% off renewables training for installers in the East of England – Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex (outside the M25), Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
• £25 off Logic4training’s working at heights course when booked in conjunction with solar thermal or solar PV courses at our Northolt centre.

Competent Persons Scheme, a guide

Many jobs in the home need to notified to and approved by your Local Authority Building Control, unless carried out by an installer who is registered with a Competent Person Scheme. Examples of the types of work covered by Building Regulations include:

• Electrical work in kitchens
• Replacement windows and doors
• New bathroom installations
• Replacement roof
• Cavity wall insulation

If work doesn’t meet Building Regulations, it will not be legal and you could be prosecuted, facing fines of up to £5,000. Fines aside, home improvements done by un-trained installers may be un-safe or cause health problems.

If you don’t choose a competent person and the Local Authority Building Control finds work to be faulty, then they could insist you put this right at your own expense. And, if the work has not been notified or carried out by a registered installer from a Competent Person Scheme you will have no record that the work complies with Building Regulations – this is important if you choose to sell your home as you may be asked to provide certificates of compliance.

Competent Person Scheme registered installers:
• Qualified to carry out specific types of work in accordance with Building Regulations
• Deal with Building Control issues on your behalf
• Notify the local authority on your behalf
• Issue a certificate of completion as proof of compliance
• Have met the criteria of the Competent Person Scheme which includes relevant experience and appropriate training. Logic4training provides installer training for electricians, gas fitters and plumbers.

To find a Competent Person Scheme registered electrician, visit www.competentperson.co.uk and enter your postcode, or the name of an installer.

More information about the Competent Person Scheme and complying with Building Regulations can be downloaded here: CLG Competent Persons Schemes

Changes to G3 building regulations

Prompted by an increase in reported hot water scalding accidents, namely by the young and elderly, revisions to Part G of the Building Regulations came into force last April.

The main amendments to the Building Regulations are as follows:

• Baths in new homes must be fitted with protective measures, such as a thermostatic mixing valve, limiting the temperature of the hot water.
• A water efficiency standard of 125 litres per day for new homes.
• Extension of existing safety measures to all types of hot water systems (not just vented ones)
• Clear guidelines for where grey water and harvested rainwater can be safely used

These changes now affect all heating and hot water installations across England and Wales, with the most significant alterations to section G3 of the building regulations.

G3: Hot water supply & systems
Previously this part of the regulation only included unvented hot water, but now covers all systems, including:

• Cold water storage cistern changes
• Updated requirements for discharge from safety devices
• Solar hot water
• Plastic soil stacks
• Heater wholesome water
• Vented hot water storage systems

In response to these changes, Logic4training has introduced has launched a new, Hot Water Systems and Safety (HWSS) course, which replaces its pre-existing unvented hot water training, covering both vented and unvented systems.

Offering both initial training and re-assessment, plumbers who already hold the pre-existing Unvented Hot Water certificate are eligible for re-assessment. Book your HWSS course place now.

First PHEX of the 2011 basks in sunshine

Logic4training has just got back from the first PHEX of the year, held at a very sunny Wembley Stadium. Unsurprisingly, renewable training courses sparked a great deal of interest, thanks the launch of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in March. Our April deal, 15% off all courses booked when you quote PHEX11, also proved popular – this is still available, until the end of the month, so don’t forget to take advantage.

While visitor numbers were slightly down on previous PHEXs’ it was still a good show. One exhibitor bemoaned the amount of students in attendance – we welcome them on the Logic4training stand – the students that visited us at PHEX nine years ago are now our customers. Catching the attentions of these young people is really important; as their careers take-off they’re more likely to come back to the service providers who were helpful to them while they were still studying.

Apart from catching up with what’s new in the plumbing and heating sector, visitors were treated to a free tour of the famous stadium, made all the more enjoyable thanks to the glorious weather.

Logic4training is now looking forward to our next PHEX, at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge on the 16th and 17th of November.

PHEX: The Plumbing & Heating Exhibition (opens in new window)

Logic4training at PHEX, Wembley Stadium, 06-07 April

2011 is set to be an exciting year for green energy, with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) launched last week (March 10). For heating engineers, now is the time to consider undergoing relevant training, in order to take advantage of this burgeoning market place.

Helping installers join the renewables revolution is Logic4training, which will be showcasing its range of micro-generation courses at PHEX, Wembley Stadium, from the 6th to the 7th of April, 2011, stand number 16. Training on-offer includes solar thermal hot water, ground and air source heat pumps and solar photovoltaics.

In order for heating engineers to help their customers take advantage of the RHI they must be registered under the Micro-generation Certification Scheme (MCS), Logic4training’s courses are recognised by the MCS so can be used as a contributing factor for gaining accreditation.

As well as renewables training, Logic4training also delivers gas courses, necessary for the Approved Certification Scheme (ACS), plumbing, electrical, air conditioning and oil heating installation training. For new entrants to the oil heating industry, Logic4training has recently launched the OFTEC Oil Firing Introductory Training Course (OFT50).

PHEX doesn’t cost anything to attend and visitors are treated to a complimentary tour of the stadium and free food! Register  here: www.phexshow.co.uk/PHEX/Register/
