Changes to Gas Safe Register requirements – make sure you’re certified

Competence to use a flue gas analyser (module CPA1 in terms of ACS) will become a pre-requisite for anyone undertaking either of the ACS appliance modules, HTR1 or CEN1 with effect from 1 February 2010.

For existing operatives already holding the CEN1 and HTR1 certificates, it will be a pre-requisite to hold the the CPA1 certificate, for their new Gas Safe Registration. Their will be a period of grace for installers, however this has yet to be clarified by the Gas Safe Register.

The Approved Certification Scheme (ACS) Strategic Management Board (SMB) has identified that in order to safely undertake work on boilers or fires, operatives must be competent in the use of flue gas analysers, especially for the installation and maintenance of boilers that use air/gas ratio valves and flueless gas fires. This is in response to recent incidents where appliances were not installed, commissioned or maintained correctly.
