MCS Accreditation explained

What is MCS?

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme or MCS as it is known is an internationally recognised quality assurance scheme and mark for Low to Zero Carbon Technology installers and products. It was designed with input from installer and product representatives. Similar to the Gas Safe Register, the MCS gives you a mark of competency and demonstrates to your customers that you can install to the highest quality every time.

Why does MCS matter?

The MCS demonstrates your competence to carry out an installation to your customers. In this rapidly growing industry, installers and products that carry the MCS Mark are likely to be seen as the preferred option in the market place. This is because MCS is linked to many of the key factors driving demand, such as:

Feed in Tariff (FiT) – the funding scheme for electricity generating renewable technologies such as Solar Photovoltaic and Wind Turbines

Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) – the proposed funding scheme for heat producing renewable technologies such as Solar Thermal, Heat Pumps (Air and Ground Source) and Biomass

Code for Sustainable Homes – Sets standards for energy efficiency and energy usage for new homes

Low Carbon Building Programme – Funding scheme for installation of renewable technologies

How does MCS work?

To become MCS accredited an installer or business will need to contact one of the MCS Registration Bodies licensed under the MCS scheme administered by Gemserve on behalf of DECC; these can be found on the MCS website. Your chosen registration body will then arrange for an inspection to take place which will assess your business against the Quality Standards published on the MCS website (MIS 001 and 002) and the relevant technology installation standard (MIS 3001 to 3007). You will be asked to provide evidence of suitable internal company procedures, suitable design methodology, installer competence and customer service management. You will also be expected to show membership of an OFT recognised code of practice.

What training can Logic4training provide?

Logic4training can offer training and assessment packages for those wishing to install the 3 main renewable technologies: Solar Thermal Hot Water, Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar Photovoltaic
