The Institution of Engineering and Technology (EIT) is amending BS 7671:2018 (IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition) to include Electric Vehicle Charging Installations.

Why the change?

Since BS7671:2018 was first published, there have been technical advances that made an update necessary. Functionality built into charging equipment uses existing technology but in a new way. The updated Section 722 will make installing charging points quicker and will reduce the cost of installations for both installers and consumers.

Where can I find out about it?

The amendment, will be published in early 2020, and free to view on the IET website

EVs all the way!

The development should help the UK lead the way in the roll-out of infrastructure to support the electric vehicle revolution. The number of EVs on the road is increasing dramatically and the UK government has set itself an ambitious target, which requires at least 50% of new car sales to be ultra-low emission by the year 2030. In order to meet this target, it is investing £400 million to accelerate the roll-out of charging infrastructure. If you’re interested in taking up the challenge and getting involved in this new area of work, we can offer you the training you need. Please click here for details of our EV course.

What do I need to become an EV charging point installer?

City & Guilds do not set any entry requirements for this qualification however we recommend that candidates have the following: On completion of the course you can register to appear on Rolec’s approved installer’s scheme and their national database of EV charge point installers, to get referrals for installation jobs in your local area. The qualification also meets the competency requirement for OLEV Grant Scheme which means your customers can apply for grant for up to 75% of the cost of for the installation of charge points at their home, and support towards the costs of buying and installing a charge-point at their workplace.
