The Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) is the industry recognised route for someone looking to become a member of the Gas Safe Register. It was introduced in 1997 and has seen many changes throughout its 20 year history. From the 1st October 2017 the scheme is being updated and as a requirement of IGEM/IG/1 Standards of Training in Gas Work, all Managed Learning Programs (ACS or NVQ’s) that lead to registration with Gas Safe Register will change to reflect the updates. Important - If you have already taken an initial CCN1 these changes will not affect you unless you have been out of the gas industry for an extended period of time. Re-assessments WILL NOT be affected by the changes. The changes are not as widespread and drastic as once thought but they will affect some sectors of the gas industry (see breakdown by sector below). In a nutshell, the route into becoming Gas Safe is going to be harder and take a little longer. The price of the courses will also go up. Please note: These changes are nationwide and are not coming from Logic4training. All training centres in the UK will have to adhere to the new requirements. We are embracing these changes for the better and will continue to improve our training programme to deliver what the industry is looking for.

Which courses does this affect?

This will affect our new entrant gas courses including the DGHI (Domestic Gas Heating Installer) for new entrants and the experienced trades route (APL) Our interview/Open day procedure for these two courses will stay the same. There will be a greater emphasis on practical training and proof of supervised on-site experience, something many experienced gas engineers will welcome. Additional one day modules on health and safety, water regulations, heating and hot water safety and systems, legionella and energy efficiency will be included in both. If you are already Gas Safe Registered this will not affect you.

Standards of training in gas work

The document by Igem deals with the minimum requirement for any training programme that is a route to Gas Safe Registration. Awarding bodies and training centres need to ensure their training methods comply with the standards laid out by the document. To access ACS from the 1st October 2017, a candidate will need to demonstrate they have undertaken a recognised training programme approved under the document. If you have already started an existing programme prior to that date then you must have completed it no more than 12 months after 30th September 2017.
