Health and safety chiefs and the Gas Safe Register are calling all homeowners to make sure they only employ the services of registered gas installers following the recent court case of Glenn Edkins, of Barton under Needwood, an unregistered gas fitter who landed a suspended prison sentence for illegal gas work that potentially endangered lives.
In this instance, Edkins supplied customers with a false Gas Safe registration number reiterating the need for homeowners to act on this information and to check whether their installer is indeed on the Gas Safe register. This can be done by calling Gas Safe Register 0800 408 550 or by visiting the website www.gassaferegister.co.uk .
Edkins has been sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to pay a victim compensation order of £1,275. He was also ordered to pay costs of £1,264 having previously pleaded guilty to three breaches of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.
HSE inspector Lyn Spooner explained: “HSE would encourage all homeowners and landlords to ensure they only use Gas Safe registered engineers and to check whether an engineer is registered before any work commences.
“Gas safety remains a priority for HSE and we will continue to bring illegal gas fitters to justice when we become aware of those who place lives in danger and show a blatant disregard for the law.”
With winter annual boiler checks now at the back of your customer’s minds as the warmer weather ensues, make sure you help keep them safe this spring with a gentle reminder to use gas registered professionals – show them your ID card to prove you’re one of them!
