The consequences of boiler neglect are well understood by installers, but the importance of regular boiler servicing remains a crucial message to drill home to customers. 


Boiler breakdowns can be hugely disruptive, leaving households without heating and hot water, not to mention the potential dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning posed by faulty boilers.


Your customers may think it’s an odd time to be reminded about boiler servicing – it’s usually during the winter months that the heating industry is hammering home the importance of regular maintenance – but new research has revealed a summer spike in our showering habits that may be placing an unnoticed strain on the nation’s boilers.


Adey Professional Heating Solutions found that there was a 15% increase in taking showers or baths during the summer months, and homeowners were twice as likely to shower more than once a day in the summer than during winter.


It’s important for professional heating and plumbing engineers to maintain the momentum with annual boiler servicing, and this is a good time of year to jog your customers’ memories.


Carrying out annual maintenance in the summer allows plenty of time to source parts if repairs are necessary, ensuring customers can enjoy their home comforts all year round.


Customer advice for keeping boilers tip-top


Make sure your customers know the following:


  • Annual service – Boilers should be checked and serviced at least once a year by a fully qualified and professional plumbing and heating engineer.
  • Gas Safe Registered – For gas boilers, customers should always ask to check the engineer’s Gas Safe Registered ID card.
  • Regular use – Boilers can seize up they are not used regularly. To prevent dust and grit accumulating, boilers should be run for 10-15 minutes at least once a month, even during warmer weather.
  • Warning signs – lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room – these are all signs that something is not at all right and expert help should be sought straight away.
  • Carbon Monoxide – a faulty boiler can produce carbon monoxide – a gas that you can’t see, smell or taste.  Customers should have an audible carbon monoxide alarm which is regularly tested, and be aware of the six signs of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness.
