Gas Safety Week 2019 begins today and to kick it off, the Heating & Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) has launched a new boiler packaging safety label.

At the beginning of Gas Safety Week 2018, the HHIC pledged that it would place Gas Safety messaging on its manufacturer member’s boiler packaging, advising consumers that gas appliances must be installed by a competent Gas Safe registered engineer.

A year later and the HHIC has made good on its promise.

The logistics and relevant trademark legalities have now been finalised and the label has been signed off by the Gas Safe Register, Health and Safety Executive, and The Register of Gas Installers of Ireland.  It will now be rolled out by all HHIC member manufacturers.

Gas Safety label

Why is a new gas safety label needed?

Despite the best efforts of the industry to bring awareness to the issue of gas safety, there is still a lot of work to be done.

According to Gas Safe Register, a third of UK adults admit they’ve let gas engineers into their homes to work on appliances without checking their credentials.

Many consumers are unfamiliar with the Gas Safe Card and if they do make checks, they’ll look on websites or at installer’s uniform for confirmation of qualifications.

Speaking on the industry achievement, Stewart Clements, Director, HHIC said;

“Every person working in the gas industry has a responsibility to help raise awareness with consumers of the dangers and risk involved in allowing somebody who is not trained, qualified, registered or insured, to work on any gas installation.”

“HHIC boiler manufacturer members made this pledge to place the Gas Safety messaging on boiler packaging, to show their commitment to continually raising Gas Safety awareness, and making it harder for unregistered ‘installers’ to operate in the industry.”

 “This prominent gas safety message for boiler packaging will now be rolled out by our members and will serve as a reminder to consumers to ensure that all gas appliances must be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer – something which can easily be checked online through the Gas Safe register, or Registered Gas Installer (ROI), or in person by checking their ID card.”
