Sometimes you get so caught up in life and work that you don’t realise until your late twenties or thirties that you’re stuck in a rut, not really enjoying what you do. Does this sound like you? Then read on.

If you’re going to make a career change, you need to think carefully.

Do your research and focus in on something that you’ll enjoy – but also something that offers you job security and the chance to earn a decent wage.

The trades are great for this. They’re well paid and because there’s always demand for fully qualified tradespeople you’re pretty much guaranteed work – wherever you live.

What do plumbers do?

Plumbers install, maintain and repair water systems and appliances in domestic and commercial buildings. It’s important work and well paid. The average plumber in Britain earns almost £34,000 a year.

Is plumbing a good career?

According to research undertaken by Boundless.co.uk, UK plumbers are the happiest professionals in the country!

The work is varied and satisfying, particularly for those who enjoy problem solving and fault-finding.

There’s great satisfaction in being able to repair faulty systems and appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and kitchen and bathroom fittings. There’s also the chance to be the hero, when you’re called out to fix problems in emergencies!

Plumbing is also the perfect grounding to move into other areas of building services, including gas central heating and renewable technologies like heat pumps and solar thermal.

How do you become a plumber at 30?

If you’re in your thirties, chances are you’ve got responsibilities and won’t have the luxury of being able to take a couple of years out to train at a college – which you may well have been able to do when you left school.

Every day counts, so you need to choose your training centre carefully.

There are lots of options out there promising to train those with no previous experience in a few weeks, but choose wisely. Make sure the training provider offers accredited training, you’ll need a Level 2 qualification to kick start your career.
