Smart meter roll-out to be extended to 2024

The government has recently pushed back the deadline for its smart meter roll-out from 2020 to 2024.

Why has the smart meter roll out been delayed?

The energy firms, who were responsible for fitting the meters have been unable to do the job fast enough because the technology wasn’t ready in time and there were issues with some of the earlier smart meters which didn’t work properly when householders switched to new suppliers.

Customers are not obliged to have a smart meter fitted, but the energy companies must have offered them to all UK households by the end of 2024.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, believes extending the smart meter roll-out deadline is good for customers:

“This new deadline gives suppliers time to fix ongoing technical problems and make sure customer service isn’t sidelined as the roll-out continues,”

Lord Duncan of Springbank, the government’s Climate Change minister said:

“We remain on track for suppliers to offer every home a smart meter by the end of next year, but to maintain momentum beyond 2020 we are proposing strict yearly installation targets for suppliers from 2021. This will deliver even greater benefits for households and reduce emissions.”

How can I train as a smart meter fitter?

Training is administered through the energy companies. Logic4training is a National Skills Academy for Power (NSAP) approved training provider for smart metering (dual fuel) and offers specialist training and facilities for the likes of Ganymede, IMServ, Keepmoat, EDF and Lowri Back.
