The Level 2 NVQ in Plumbing and Heating is the UK’s nationally recognised, work-based standard for proving occupational competence as a plumber. Unlike a Plumbing Diploma, the NVQ assesses your real-world installation work on live sites, which is why it is the qualification that contractors, employers and approved plumber schemes require.

A Level 2 Plumbing NVQ is essential if you want to:

Category 2 is designed for candidates who have achieved a recognised plumbing qualification from City & Guilds, BPEC or EAL. Suitable qualifications include: City & Guilds Level 2 or 3 Plumbing Studies Technical (6129-33) or Craft (6035) Certificate, a BPEC Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Foundation or EAL Level 2 Intermediate Diploma in Plumbing.

For all categories, we will also need to know any other related qualifications you might hold, including: Domestic Gas ACS (CCN1 & CENWAT), OFTEC Oil, HETAS, WRAS, Hot Water Systems & Safety (HWSS), Legionella, Underfloor Heating, Renewables (heat pumps/solar thermal).

Candidates will spend up to two days in the centre where they will receive an introduction to the NVQ, including a briefing session for the portfolio, which will be completed on site – a key part of the NVQ process.

Initial Assessment

In-centre Training

To complete the Level 2 Plumbing NVQ, candidates spend one week in-centre, during which time they will undertake training and assessment for the following:

Water Supply Regulations and Bylaws
NVQ briefing and portfolio session

Once training is complete, candidates can proceed to the NVQ portfolio element.

We will assess your suitability, with an introductory conversation where will discuss your plumbing experience. You will need to provide supporting evidence in writing, such as your employment history/records.

Before training, candidates will be asked to confirm that they can confidently install and commission the following:

Bathroom sanitary equipment
Heat emitter (radiator or towel rail)
Connections to drainage and supplies
Pipework fabrication and commissioning

Candidates will be assessed on two of these elements, plus the regulations and theory for the installation of plumbing fixtures.

Candidates who do not meet the requirements for Route 3 can complete the full Level 2 Plumbing and Heating Diploma.

In-centre Training

To complete the Level 2 Plumbing NVQ Diploma candidates spend three weeks in-centre, during which time they will undertake training and assessment for the following:

Health & Safety Regulations
Energy, waste and water conservation
Fault finding for hot & cold water systems and central heating
Electrical installation of plumbing and heating system components, including safe isolation
Installation and maintenance of above ground drainage systems
Water Supply Regulations and Bylaws
NVQ briefing and portfolio session

Once training is complete, candidates can proceed to the NVQ portfolio element.

The on-site portfolio is the core of every NVQ. It’s the evidence that proves you can actually do the work, not just answer questions about it.

Every candidate, regardless of route, must complete the same portfolio requirement: two witnessed on-site assessments plus a body of supporting evidence uploaded to our e-portfolio platform. We conduct on-site assessments remotely via Microsoft Teams, so you can complete your portfolio around live jobs with no waiting for an assessor to travel to site. We have broken down the portfolio below.

Most candidates complete their portfolio within 2-5 months of finishing the in-centre element, but you have up to 2 years. This is useful if your work pipeline is seasonal or you’re waiting for the right job to come up.

Complete bathroom install

A bathroom installation witnessed and signed off. This includes sanitary equipment, supply and waste connections, and commissioning and accompanying pipework.

Heating or hot water install

A central heating or hot water system installation witnessed and signed off. This includes radiators and accompanying pipework.

Remote Assessment

Both witnessed assessments are conducted live by a Logic4training assessor using Microsoft Teams. No travel, no waiting for an assessor visit.

E-Portfolio platform

All supporting evidence such as photos, drawings, sign-off sheets, written accounts can be uploaded to our online e-portfolio platform, accessible 24/7.

Final sign-off and certification

Once your portfolio is complete and both witnessed assessments are signed off, your evidence is internally verified and submitted to LCL Awards for certification.

How the NVQ portfolio is verified.

Your evidence is reviewed in three stages before LCL Awards issues your certificate. Each piece of evidence is checked against the NVQ unit criteria by your Logic4training assessor. Then, a separate Logic4training IQA verifier samples your portfolio to confirm it meets LCL Awards standards, and finally, LCL Awards conducts external verification before issuing the final certificate.

What are the entry requirements for the NVQ Level 2 Plumbing course?

The NVQ Level 2 is an experienced-level qualification to prove the competence you already have. You must meet one of these starting points:

Category 1: Hold the LCL Awards Level 2 Plumbing & Heating Diploma.
Category 2: Hold a recognised equivalent (C&G 6129-33, C&G 6035, BPEC L2 Diploma, EAL L2 Intermediate Diploma).
Category 3: Have a minimum of three years’ verifiable industry experience in plumbing and heating, with evidence (employment records, references, or self-employment evidence).

Category 2 & 3 candidates must complete a pre-assessment (from £195 + VAT) to confirm the right route.

All candidates must:

Be 18 or over
Have access to live plumbing installation work for on-site portfolio assessments
