Installers who have priced up jobs for solar photovoltaic panel installations should warn customers that from April 1st 2014, the feed-in-tariff (FIT) will be cut for photovoltaic (pv) systems up to 50kW - so timing is crucial if they are to lock-in to the current lower rate. From April 1st, rates for solar pv installations will be as follows*:
  • Smaller installations of less than 4kW will receive 14.38 p/kWh of energy fed into the grid (a cut of 3.5 per cent)
  • For installations between 4kW and 10kW, the tariff will be 13.03 p/kWh (also a cut of 3.5 per cent)
  • Larger installations of between 10kW and 50kW will be 12.13 p/kWh for every kWh of solar power generated.
So, if you have customers seriously considering solar for their home and can complete their installation within this quarter; it’s well worth letting them know that if they act now, they can take advantage of a higher FIT rate; now and for the future – they’ll certainly thank you for it! Since the FIT scheme was first introduced in 2010, there have been a number of changes, including drastic cuts in 2011 and 2012. Despite these cuts, the industry has soldiered on with the FIT programme supporting the largest portion of pv projects in 2013, with 385 MW of FIT projects out of 1 GW reported by the end of the year.
