Solar Thermal Heating Installer Course overview

Logic4training’s Solar Thermal Domestic Hot Water Systems Installater course is designed to give an entry level qualification for experienced domestic heating installers or plumbers, wishing to include solar thermal heating in their scope of works. The solar thermal course meets the training entry requirements for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

Alternatively Logic4training's Solar Thermal Designer course can be undertaken by operatives who do not have the relevant qualifications and experience, but who need an understanding of domestic solar thermal hot water to manage, design or specify systems for others to install.  All of the content of the Solar Thermal Design course is covered on the Solar Thermal Installer course.

Thanks to legally binding targets to cut carbon and the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), solar thermal is a natural development for heating and plumbing market and should be considered by any heating and plumbing installation company or engineer. View our renewable energy blog for regular updates on what is happening in the green energy sector.

The cost of the course includes training, assessment, the certification fee and a course manual.

Entry requirements

Operatives should hold a Hot Water Systems and Sytems  or Unvented Hot Water Systems qualification and a recognised competency in a conventional fuel i.e. gas, oil or solid fuel. Those in the plumbing field should have an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent plumbing qualification. Experience in basic electrical practice and an understanding of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulation 1999 is also beneficial.

Do I need this course?

The solar thermal heating course is intended for experienced domestic heating installers or plumbers who wish to up-skill to include solar heating in their offering.

Course content/syllabus

The course covers the predominant North European fluid filled, indirect solar water heating systems. The course does not cover all possible variants of this subject and manufacturer’s support and guidance should always be sought when fitting equipment. The following topics are covered:

  • Regulations and standards
  • Solar thermal collector types
  • Solar heated storage types (storage cylinders)
  • Solar primary system types
  • Basic solar heating system design and integration
  • External and internal site survey, installation methods and materials
  • Filling and commissioning
  • Solar thermal system servicing and fault finding

The solar hot water training is not intended to cover roof or access work in detail, other than to highlight legislative requirements. It is therfore recommend that solar thermal installers also complete the Logic4training Working at Heights course.

Operatives who book on to the Working at Height course at the same time as Solar Thermal course will then receive the Working at Height course at the reduced price of £100.00 + vat.

Logic4training’s Solar Thermal Installer course includes a practical and written assessment. The written paper takes the form of a multiple choice question paper and a design scenario. Successful candidates will be issued with a Logic Certification Solar Thermal Hot Water certificate.
