Refrigeration courses explained.
New to F-Gas, or due a reassessment? These quick answers explain the qualifications and when each one is needed.
The lower categories restrict you by activity or by refrigerant charge, so Category 1 avoids turning work away later. Getting there runs in two stages: Basic Refrigeration Qualifications first for handling competence and underpinning knowledge, then Level 3 Refrigeration for the full Category 1 qualification, reassessment, brazing and flammable refrigerants.
If your work involves heat pumps, F-Gas sits alongside our heat pump courses rather than replacing them.
There are no formal prerequisites for the basic course, but it is aimed at engineers already working in the industry or moving into refrigeration and air conditioning. You should have experience installing air conditioning systems, or heating and hot water systems, and be familiar with pipework installation techniques and the principles of heat transfer and pressure.
The basic course also works as a refresher and as preparatory training for the Category 1 F-Gas Certification Course, which builds on it. If you are unsure where you fit, speak to our team before booking.
F-Gas work is governed by the GB F-Gas Regulations, with DEFRA as the enforcing authority. Certification is mandatory: anyone handling fluorinated gases must hold a valid certificate, companies need their own company certification, and refrigerant suppliers are required to check certification before selling.
REFCOM is the UK's F-Gas certification body for refrigeration and air conditioning businesses, and companies handling fluorinated gases need REFCOM or equivalent company certification alongside their operatives' individual qualifications.
It applies to refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump work alike. Companies employing certified engineers also need their own company certification, and refrigerant suppliers are required to check certification before selling to you.
The LCL Awards Level 3 F-Gas qualification covers Category 1, which permits all F-Gas activities regardless of refrigerant charge size.
The F-Gas Reassessment Course is £495 + VAT, considerably less than sitting the full qualification again at £1,095 + VAT, so it is worth booking before your certificate lapses rather than after.
Refrigerant suppliers check certification at point of sale, so an expired certificate stops you buying gas as well as working legally.
As F-Gas quotas tighten, more equipment arrives charged with R32, R290 propane and similar refrigerants, and the safety requirements differ from traditional non-flammable gases. Many manufacturers and employers now expect this training before you work on their equipment, and it is separate from your F-Gas certification rather than included in it.
See the ACRIB Flammable Refrigerants course for dates.
The full Category 1 F-Gas qualification is the longest, since it combines theory with practical assessment. Reassessment, brazing and flammable refrigerants are all shorter, which keeps you off the tools for less time.
Exact durations are listed on each course page within our refrigeration range.
The ACRIB Flammable Refrigerants course is £425 + VAT, F-Gas reassessment and oxy-fuel brazing are both £495 + VAT, and the full Level 3 F-Gas qualification is £1,095 + VAT.
We also offer 0% finance and pay-in-instalments options, so speak to our team about the best route for you.
