Level 3 F-Gas assumes knowledge that newcomers do not yet have. Three days on refrigeration fundamentals, terminology and brazing makes the difference between passing that assessment and struggling through it.

Basic refrigeration explained.
New to F-Gas? These answers explain where to start before the Level 3 qualification.
Candidates without a recognised refrigeration or related qualification, or without two years of auditable industry experience, must complete this course before sitting the Level 3 Category 1 qualification.
If you do meet those requirements, it is still worth considering as preparatory training, particularly if you have been away from refrigeration work or your brazing is rusty.
Experience-route candidates must provide a letter from their employer confirming how long they have worked in refrigeration or air conditioning, that the work was carried out alongside a qualified registered engineer, and what types of units and systems they worked on. All candidates need a good practical working knowledge of soldering and brazing methods.
If you do not meet these requirements, the Basic F-Gas course is your route in."
There are no formal prerequisites, but you should already be working in a building services trade or planning to move into RAC work. Familiarity with pipework installation and the principles of heat transfer and pressure will help you get the most from it.
This course leads to a certificate of attendance rather than a regulated qualification, so it is the preparation that makes the Category 1 assessment achievable, not the certification itself. Refrigerant suppliers will still ask for your F-Gas certificate before selling to you.
It covers refrigeration and air conditioning fundamentals, terminology and equipment application, an introduction to more complex systems, pipework joining techniques including brazing, and refrigerant recovery. The brazing element matters most for progression, since practical brazing ability is an entry expectation for the Level 3 assessment and the most common sticking point for candidates.
Heating engineers moving into heat pumps often find the refrigeration side unfamiliar, and this course provides that grounding before progressing to Category 1 certification. It pairs naturally with our heat pump courses, which cover the heating system design side rather than the refrigerant circuit.
For example, the Basic F-Gas Refrigeration Training Course is priced at £495 + VAT.
