As many thousands of students, having received their GCSE or A-Level grades this summer, are left to contemplate their future, September could prove a fruitful month for businesses looking to expand!
This glut of school-leavers presents a fresh pool of talent – enthusiastic and motivated; keen to get into the world of work. Government reports suggest more and more young people are favouring the ‘earn while you learn’ route rather than opting for the traditional university path – and it’s hardly surprising. It is claimed that the average student, starting this autumn, could clock-up debts of £53,000* by the time they graduate!
For the sole trader and smaller heating and plumbing firms, for whom recruitment of skilled-staff could prove too costly, apprentices are a cost-effective means of business expansion. All employed apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage, but some training costs can be covered for apprentices.
