FAQs
MOCoPA stands for Meter Operation Code of Practice Agreement. It sets the industry standard for the safe installation, exchange, and maintenance of electricity meters in the UK. MOCoPA authorisation is essential for installers to work legally and safely on metering systems, ensuring compliance with national regulations and customer safety.
This course is for existing smart meter installers currently employed by a MOCoPA-authorised business, but who have never held MOCoPA authorisation themselves. Candidates must be employed by such a business to enrol.
The course includes all aspects of the Smart Meter Installation Code of Practice (SMICoP), covering installation, testing, customer service, metering principles, safety procedures, earthing arrangements, new connections, and the operation of smart meter communication systems. It also includes practical and written assessments, culminating in registration with the Energy & Utilities Skills Register (EUSR).
The UK government’s ongoing smart meter rollout means demand for qualified installers remains high. Energy companies are seeking skilled professionals to meet installation targets and maintain existing infrastructure.
MOCoPA authorisation is a key requirement for advanced roles in metering and energy management. It opens up opportunities for supervisory positions, specialist installations, and work with major energy providers.
SMETS2 refers to the second generation of smart meters in the UK, offering improved interoperability and security. The course covers SMETS2 communications, including working with providers like Telefonica and Arqiva, and the operation of in-home displays (IHDs).
