Firefighter makes a career change
David T. is a fireman and an ex-army veteran who was serving in the British Army for 8 years.

He is a grafter and decided that he wanted to make a change.

David decided to establish his own business with his ex-army friend Grant P. in order to be in control and ensure that he works towards getting a better financial return for the hours he puts in.

With this in mind, David & Grant have signed up to Logic4training’s new GOLD plumbing package in Northolt. David had done a bit of plumbing in the past and thought this was a great start towards building their business Hertfordshire Plumbing & Gas.

David has been impressed with what he’s learnt so far and has enjoyed taking on new challenges:
“The quality of the trainers at Northolt is superb and everyone there has been incredibly supportive. They’re adaptable too, which is important when you’re dealing with people of different ages and from different career backgrounds.

“I decided to take the GOLD package as I want to set up Hertfordshire Plumbing & Gas – a plumbing and heating company and need ACS to register with Gas Safe.

“The training’s been good. Initially it starts off quite theory based in the classroom, but you soon get your hands on the tools and the days are split.

“I’ve just completed the plumbing part of the training where I’d spend the morning in the classroom and the afternoon in the workshop on practical stuff.

You’re assessed as you go along, with three tests a week, so your knowledge and confidence grow hand-in-hand.

New year, new career
“After Christmas I go back and start the gas training. I’m really looking forward to that. There’s three week’s training in-centre and then I go off and complete a portfolio to demonstrate my practical abilities.”

“For this part of the training, I’ll work alongside experienced gas engineers – building my skills and a detailed record of the work I’ve undertaken.”

“As well as forming a significant part of my final assessment, the portfolio will be a valuable document I can show prospective employers.”

“Once the portfolio part of the course is complete, I then go back into the centre in Northolt for more training and revision before I sit our final assessments. All being well, I’ll be ready to register with Gas Safe at the end of March!”

And what of the firefighters plans after that? David said:
“I need to be realistic, there’s no point in rushing into my new business. No one knows who I am yet! I need to grow my reputation first. Initially I plan to work for other companies and slowly develop my own business on the side – small jobs at weekends, that sort of thing.

“That way I can gain experience and get known around the area. I am launching a Facebook page next week so that I can connect with potential customers in North London, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.”

Training for career changers
The GOLD package is one of four training packages designed for people with little or no previous experience.

It starts with an NVQ Level 2 in plumbing and culminates in Gas ACS, covering everything you need to know to be a qualified plumbing and heating engineer.

Through these packages, Logic4training aims to set learners up for work at different levels within the plumbing and heating sector as efficiently and quickly as possible, without cutting corners.

When you’re making a career change and have responsibilities of your own, there’s no time to waste – you want to get the skills you need to hit the ground running.
