Most engineers start with air source, which covers the majority of domestic installations, then add ground source as a top-up. Both are Level 3 qualifications aimed at existing plumbing and heating installers.
Air source covers systems that extract heat from outside air, which is the majority of domestic installations. Ground source covers systems using buried collectors or boreholes.
The heating side of the system is broadly the same, so the difference is mainly in the heat collection: siting, noise and defrost considerations for air source, ground loop design, ground conditions and drilling for ground source. Ground source projects tend to be larger, more expensive and less common, which is why most installers train in air source first and add ground source when a specific job calls for it.

If you are moving across from gas or oil, your existing appliance qualifications provide much of the underpinning knowledge the course builds on.
