Keep up the annual services to help customers stay safe!

The latest study undertaken by Gas Safe Register reveals that more than nine in 10 UK gas consumers cannot identify deadly appliances. The gas safety authority showed 1,200 gas consumers 10 photographs of gas appliances; eight were life-threatening, while two were safe.

Nearly all respondents (95 per cent) thought that at least one of the potentially deadly appliances were safe, which is grave news for an industry blighted by unnecessary cases of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and fatalities.

Only one in 11 people who took part in the research said they would get each of the dangerous appliances checked if it broke down, while one in 14 wouldn’t get it checked at all!

The study only goes to show how important it is for professional heating and plumbing engineers to maintain momentum with annual gas safety checks and servicing. As we move into the spring and summer months and boilers are being used less, you’re customers may not be chasing you for a service, but make it your priority to book in the appointments now.

Educate your customers on how to spot deadly gas appliances; explain that CO is a silent killer and urge them to sign-up to, which features a free reminder service to get appliances checked.

Other top tips for staying safe include:

  • Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm which will sound if dangerous levels of CO are detected in a property
  • Leave the 24 hour national has emergency number with your customers should they ever need it: 0800 111 999.

We offer carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide testing training designed for gas engineers responsible for suspected CO leak call-outs in domestic properties. Click here for our full range of gas safety courses.
