Revised GIUSP starts next month – Are you ready?

June 7, 2016 featured image

Gas Safe Register will start inspecting to the revised Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP) from the 1st July 2016.

It’s nearly a year since the major changes to the procedure were put into place and most of you will have already been working to the new classifications.

We have been sending reminders to prepare for the changes to our newsletter subscribers. You can sign up here.

When the changes were originally made in 2015, a long lead-in period allowed registered businesses the time to adjust and revise their processes, procedures and documentation. Gas Safe Register allowed this time for engineers to make the necessary changes, while encouraging them to adopt the new procedure as soon as possible.

With effect from the 1st July 2016, the Register will inspect to the new GIUSP.

A reminder of what’s changed

From Gas Safe Register

The Unsafe Situations Procedure now provides a single and clear message for immediately dangerous and at risk situations.

Irrespective of either AR or ID classification being applied, the message is the same – Danger Do Not Use.

The actions for gas engineers remain unchanged: that is, seek permission to turn off for both AR and ID situations.

Additionally, for ID situations, call the Emergency Service Provider (ESP), or gas supplier for LPG, if permission to disconnect is not given.

The Not to Current Standards (NCS) category has been removed from the procedure because, by definition, these situations are not unsafe. You may still advise of NCS situations, but this no longer forms part of the official Unsafe Situations Procedure.

The single safety message sends a clear message to the gas user/responsible person that the appliance/installation is either safe or unsafe. It provides a means for engineers to fulfil the requirements placed upon them by the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998 to notify or inform responsible persons and owners of premises/appliances of safety defects and dangers.
