Plumbing profession comes out tops in new parent poll!
Parents believe that a plumbing qualification will give their children a better chance of finding a job than a law or science degree, according to new research.
A new parent poll, commissioned by City & Guilds and the Edge Foundation, reveals some 57 per cent of respondents rated a young person with a plumbing qualification or apprenticeship, considering them ‘very employable’. This compares to 53 per cent of those with law degrees, 52 per cent for science degree, 22 per cent for an English degree and just 8 per cent for a history degree.
The survey did, however, reveal a ‘disconnect’ between parental perceptions of employment prospects and their children’s education, with most still wanting their children to go down the academic route rather than taking up an apprenticeship to learn a trade, for example.
Chris Jones, chief executive of City & Guilds, explained: “For too long [university] was portrayed as the best and only route to success. Young people need the opportunity to explore their options and discover exactly what route is right for them – whether it’s an apprenticeship, going straight into employment or pursuing a degree.”
