Unvented cylinders and water regulations are where plumbing meets compliance. Both qualifications are short, both are expected by approved plumber schemes, and both open up work that unqualified plumbers cannot take.

Water safety courses explained.
Fitting cylinders or working to the regulations? These answers explain which qualification your work needs.
The recognised proof of competence is the Hot Water Systems and Safety (HWSS) certificate, which covers safe installation, the three-tier safety strategy, discharge pipework and servicing. It is also what Competent Person Schemes require before you can self-certify this work.
Without it, installations must be notified to Local Authority Building Control instead.
If your existing certificate is titled "G3 Unvented" or "Unvented Hot Water", the HWSS re-assessment is now your renewal route. The content includes everything from the old course plus the wider G3 requirements for vented systems.
See the HWSS course page for both initial and re-assessment routes.
If your certificate has expired within the last 12 months you can take the shorter re-assessment route. If it expired more than 12 months ago, you must complete the full initial assessment again. Water Regulations certificates are also commonly refreshed on a five-year cycle by approved plumber schemes and contractors, so most engineers renew both together.
Keeping HWSS in date is also what maintains your ability to self-certify through a Competent Person Scheme.
The Regulations are the law governing how water fittings must be installed to prevent waste, misuse and contamination of the public supply. WRAS approves compliant fittings and publishes the Water Regulations Guide that the industry works to.
For HWSS you need experience installing domestic hot and cold water systems, both vented and unvented, plus a recognised competency in a conventional fuel such as gas or oil, or an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent if you work in the plumbing sector.
If you are new to the trade, start with the Level 2 Plumbing Diploma and add these afterwards.
Approved plumber status lets you self-certify water fittings work, which speeds up jobs and is recognised by water suppliers nationwide. Many plumbers take Water Regulations and HWSS together to cover the full range of domestic work.
