The Hot Water Association (HWA) and Heat Pump Association UK (HPA UK) have jointly published a new technical guide to help installers, specifiers and manufacturers better understand the regulatory requirements surrounding unvented hot water systems. The publication, Unvented Hot Water Systems: Regulatory Compliance Explained, has been developed in response to the growing adoption of low-carbon heating technologies, particularly heat pumps.

Why the Guide Matters

As heat pump installations become more common, many installers have questioned how existing regulations apply to modern hot water systems. This new guide makes it clear that while heating technology is evolving, the regulatory requirements for unvented hot water systems remain unchanged.

Whether an unvented cylinder is connected to a gas boiler, heat pump, solar thermal system or another heat source, installers must continue to comply with the requirements set out in Approved Document G3 and the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations.

A Practical Resource for Installers

Presented in an easy-to-follow question-and-answer format, the guide addresses many of the most common compliance queries faced by installers and designers.

Topics include:

  • The application of Approved Document G3
  • Water Regulations requirements
  • The use of third-party approved control strategies
  • When alternative installation methods may be acceptable
  • The importance of following manufacturer instructions and Building Control guidance

The aim is to encourage a consistent approach to compliance while supporting the safe rollout of low-carbon heating technologies.

Safety Remains the Priority

The HWA and HPA UK emphasise that innovation should never come at the expense of safety. As manufacturers continue to develop new integrated heating solutions, installers are reminded that any deviation from an approved product configuration should only be undertaken with written approval from the manufacturer and agreement from the relevant Building Control Body.
