How do you become a gas engineer?

To become a fully qualified, registered gas engineer, you must complete recognised gas training, build an on-site portfolio of gas work under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered engineer, undertake ACS training and assessment resulting in a CCN1 qualification (core gas safety) plus the specific appliances you plan to work on, and register with the Gas Safe Register. Logic4training's Domestic Gas Heating Installer programme covers all of the above for new entrants, plus other essential qualifications such as WRAS Water Regulations and health and safety courses. Commercial, catering and LPG qualifications are separate and can be added later.

How long does it take to become a gas engineer?

With the Domestic Gas Heating Installer New Entrants Route, the Bronze and Silver packages take 8 weeks of in-centre training plus the on-site gas portfolio, which varies by individual. The Gold package takes 9 weeks plus the portfolio, adding the Essential Site Skills and Boiler Fault Finding courses. All courses are full-time, starting at 8.30am and finishing around 4.00pm.

What do gas engineers do?

Gas engineers install, service, maintain and repair gas appliances in domestic and commercial properties. Typical duties include installing and repairing appliances and heating systems, maintaining or replacing faulty systems, cutting, bending and joining pipes, providing cost estimates, checking for gas leaks and ensuring all work meets safety requirements. There are around 23 million gas boilers in the UK, and a trained gas engineer can also upskill into renewable technologies such as heat pumps.

Are there any entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but candidates are assessed to check their suitability. A good understanding of maths and English is essential.

What qualifications will I gain?

On completing the Domestic Gas Heating Installer New Entrants Route you will gain ACS CCN1 (Core Domestic Gas Safety, including CPA1) and CENWAT (Central Heating Boilers & Water Heaters) via the Gas Managed Learning Programme, plus the Water Regulations & Bylaws, Hot Water Systems & Safety and LCL Awards Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating qualifications, and five online health and safety certificates. After a mandatory 12-month period as a Gas Safe registered engineer, you can add further appliance qualifications such as CKR1 (cookers), HTR1 (space heaters), DAH1 (warm air heaters), MET1 (meters), LAU1 (tumble dryers), REGT1 (medium pressure meter regulators) and LEI1 (leisure equipment).

How many people are there per course?

Classes have a maximum of 10 people. Class sizes are kept small so you have more contact time with your trainer.

Will I be able to join the Gas Safe Register?

Yes. After completing your Gas Managed Learning Programme and passing your ACS assessments, you can apply to join the Gas Safe Register.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. Logic4training has partnered with OMNI Retail Finance so you can spread the cost of the course. Let your course advisor know you want to spread the cost and they can help you start the process.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

All tools and equipment are provided during this course, though you will need to bring steel toe-capped boots for the workshop. In some circumstances candidates may bring their own test equipment, but please check beforehand.

Do I need to buy my own textbooks?

No. Logic4training supplies reading material and textbooks on the first day of attendance. It is a good idea to bring your own pens, highlighters and sticky notes.

Q: Can I do this course on weekends?

Yes. The Domestic Gas Heating Installer Course and Gas Managed Learning Programme can be completed on weekends at our Northolt centre. Each course takes around 3 months to complete on the weekend route.

To become a gas engineer in the UK, you need to complete recognised gas training, build an on-site portfolio of gas work, pass your ACS assessments (CCN1 and CENWAT), and apply to the Gas Safe Register. How to become a gas engineer without an apprenticeship.

If you have no experience, our Domestic Gas Heating Installer New Entrants Route takes you from complete beginner to Gas Safe registered and is an alternative to an apprenticeship, designed for career changers, adult learners, and those leaving school.

The route is built around two core elements. The Domestic Gas Heating Installer Course and the Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP) – specifically the DNGA3, which together give you the practical skills, portfolio and ACS qualifications (CCN1 and CENWAT) needed to apply to the Gas Safe Register. Once qualified, you can go further:

Upskill into additional gas appliances such as cookers, fires and warm air heaters after the mandatory 12-month period.
Move into commercial gas or LPG as your experience grows.
Expand into renewables, including heat pumps, as demand for low-carbon heating rises.

In-centre training & Portfolio Building

Here comes the best bit! On your start date, you’ll go into the centre to begin your theory and practical training, working to complete the Domestic Gas Heating Installer Course (DGHI) & Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP). Over the 8 weeks, you’ll learn all the essential skills and theoretical underpinnings needed to become a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. Following your training, you must produce a portfolio of gas-related tasks before you return for your final ACS assessments.

ClubLogic: Online revision

At Logic4training, we’re committed to providing both in-centre training and an online revision platform. ClubLogic, our online platform, doesn’t replace in-centre learning but allows you to take what you’ve learned in the class and revisit it online. Once you have completed your in-centre training, you must move on to the mandatory on-site portfolio element. This stage is designed to provide you with real-world, hands-on experience under the supervision of a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Complete your final assessments

Once you have finished your in-centre gas training, online revision modules and gas portfolio, it is time to put your knowledge and practical skills to the test.

Candidates are required to carry out the ACS assessments to demonstrate competency in the gas sector. You will be working towards gaining your CCN1 and CENWAT ACS qualifications.

Work as a gas engineer

Following your ACS assessments, you will be able to apply to the Gas Safe Register. At this stage, you can become an employed gas engineer, a self-employed gas engineer, or continue your training to add the ability to work with heat pumps.

If you are looking to upskill to work on more domestic appliances or enter the commercial gas sector, you will be able to do so after a mandatory 12-month period.

To become a fully qualified* registered gas engineer, you must:

All our courses are full-time. Courses start at 8.30 am and usually finish at around 4.00 pm. You will be advised on your first day at the centre if there are any changes to these times. The centre is open from 8.00 am, and there is tea & coffee awaiting.

Gas engineers install, service, maintain and repair gas appliances in domestic and/or commercial properties.

As we move away from fossil fuels, gas engineers will continue to maintain exisiting boilers. In 2024, gas boiler fittings outnumbered heat pump installations by more that 15 to one. It is likely that these new boilers will last for around 20 years. Currently, there are around 23 million gas boilers in the UK.

Ultimately, gas is just the fuel; a gas installer should view themselves as a ‘heating engineer’. As a trained gas engineer, you will have the right qualifications and experience to upskill into increasingly popular renewable technologies, like heat pumps. These upskill courses take around five days, depending on experience.

A gas engineer who can also install heat pumps and other renewables, such as solar thermal, will be in demand now and in the future.

Typical duties may include:

Installing or repairing appliances to deliver gas
Repairing gas appliances and heating systems.
Maintaining or replacing faulty systems.
Cutting, bending & joining pipes and fittings.
Providing cost estimates to customers, and talking through additional cover, insurance options & energy saving options.
Carrying out estimates, checking for gas leaks & ensuring all repairs/installations are up to code.
Ensuring all safety requirements are met accordingly.

The average salary for a UK gas engineer in 2026 is around £40,000-£43,000 per year, comfortably above the national average and one of the best-paid domestic trades. Newly qualified engineers typically start at around £28,000-£32,000, rising to £45,000+ with experience, with commercial gas roles paying more again.

Self-employed gas engineers generally earn the most, with well-established engineers taking home £55,000-£70,000+ per year and day rates commonly ranging from £300-£600. Earnings vary with experience, location (London and the South East pay the highest), specialisms such as commercial gas or heat pumps, and whether you’re employed or self-employed.

One reason gas engineering pays so well is the regulatory barrier: only Gas Safe registered engineers can legally work on gas, which keeps qualified engineers in consistently high demand.

DAH1 – Warm Air Heaters

MET1 – Meters

LAU1 – Tumble Dryers

REGT1 – Medium Pressure Meter Regulators

LEI1 – Domestic Gas Fired Leisure Equipment (Appliance range: barbecues, greenhouse heaters, refrigerators, gas pokers, gas lighting and patio heaters)

Classes can have a maximum of 10 people. We like to keep our class sizes small, so that you have more contact time with your trainer.

Yes. After completing your Gas Managed Learning Programme, you can apply to join the Gas Safe Register.

All tools and equipment are provided during this course. However, you will need to bring hard steel toe-capped boots for when you are in the workshop. In some circumstances, candidates may bring their own test equipment if they so desire, but please check beforehand.

Logic4training will supply reading material and textbooks on the first day of attendance; however, it is a good idea to bring in pens, highlighters, and sticky notes.
