Gas Engineers Criticised in new report

August 25, 2015 featured image

According to a new investigation by Which?, an alarming number of boiler engineers are failing to run basic checks on faulty boilers.

The report revealed that eight out of ten qualified engineers, five from high profile service brands like British Gas and HomeServe and five from independents, failed to do one or more of the minimum legal checks on central heating boilers.

This ranged from examining the flue to checking the gas pressure, something all well trained, Gas Safe Registered engineers should be more than familiar with.

Six out of ten did not spot that the operating pressure had been set too high, a fault which could result in the boiler overheating. Two engineers also failed to take the case off the boiler to check the seal.

Which? used hidden cameras to film the engineers and then experts assessed each boiler service against gas regulations and the manufacturer’s servicing instructions. They found that none of the engineers followed the instructions properly and only two met the legal requirements.

The results are shocking to say the least and the fact that some of these engineers came from some of the big service brands is even more disturbing.

Logic4training would advise that engineers take your training manuals with you as an on-site reference and also use some of the manufacturer apps and guides.

Worcester Bosch and other boiler companies have their own applications allowing you to find manuals for their boilers at the touch of a button. These can be found online, on the manufacturer’s websites.
