The AM2 assessment is the final, practical sign‑off that proves you are ready to work as a qualified electrician. It brings together everything you’ve learned in-centre and on-site, testing your ability to meet the electrical industry standards.

Who is the AM2 for?

The AM2 Assessment is the mandatory end-point assessment for those seeking to become fully qualified electricians in the UK. It is essential for C&G 2357 Level 3 Electrical NVQ candidates needing final sign-off, electrical apprentices reaching their completion gateway, and ECS Gold Card applicants aiming for Approved Electrician status. Additionally, professionals on the C&G 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment route require this for certification, though they typically sit the AM2E. Successfully passing this assessment is the final industry-recognised step to proving occupational competence in accordance with 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

What are the different types of the AM2 assessments?

Electrics Icon

AM2

The long-established version for those completing a C&G 2357 Level 3 Electrical NVQ or older apprenticeship framework. It focuses on core installation and testing, typically excluding the additional containment tasks found in newer versions.

Electrics Icon

AM2S

The specific End-Point Assessment (EPA) for the Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship Standard for apprentices registered before September 2023.

Electrics Icon

AM2S v1

The latest version of the EPA, mandatory for apprentices registered on the Installation/Maintenance Standard from September 2023 onwards. It features updated sections including a 1-hour planning and risk assessment unit (A1) and an expanded 10.5-hour composite installation.

Electrics Icon

AM2E

Designed for those on the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) route, such as City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification (2346). It structurally mirrors the AM2S, including the additional containment tasks, but is only available once you have passed your EWA gateway checks.

Electrics Icon

AM2D

The End-Point Assessment for the Domestic Electrician Apprenticeship Standard. While it follows the standard pattern of isolation and testing, it uses domestic-specific scenarios and includes a professional discussion/interview element.

Electrics Icon

AM2ED

The domestic equivalent of the AM2E. It is for experienced workers completing a Domestic Experienced Worker Assessment. It covers identical practical content to the AM2D but without the apprenticeship-specific interview.

  • Level 2 Diploma

    7 weeks

You may already have completed the C&G 2365 Level 2 Electrical Diploma, but it is the first step to becoming an electrician and is a prerequisite qualification for the C&G 2365 Level 3 Electrical Diploma.

  • Level 3 Diploma

    6 weeks

You may already have completed the C&G 2365 Level 3 Electrical Diploma that focuses on advanced electrical theory, fault finding and inspection. It is a pre-requisite qualification that is required to complete the C&G 2357 Level 3 Electrical NVQ.

  • 18th Edition

    3 days

The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations is an essential course teaches you how to navigate the UK’s national safety standard (BS 7671). It is a requirement for almost all site work and is necessary for your future ECS card application. You may already hold this qualification.

  • Level 3 NVQ

    6-18 months

During the C&C 2357 Level 3 Electrical NVQ, you'll gather evidence of your practical competence while working on real-world installations. An assessor will verify your portfolio to ensure you meet industry standards for safety and quality.

  • The AM2

    3 days

The Achievement Measurement 2 (AM2) is the final unit of the Level 3 NVQ. It is a three-day practical and theory exam taken at an AM2 approved centre. Passing this is the final hurdle to proving you are a competent, skilled electrician.

  • ECS Gold Card

    6-8 weeks

With your NVQ and AM2 certificates, you can apply for the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Gold Card. This is your professional "passport" that allows you to work independently on any commercial or industrial site in the UK.

What are the entry requirements for the AM2 Assessment?

To maintain the highest industry standards, the AM2 Assessment is not an open-entry exam. Before you can book onto any AM2 at an approved NET centre, you must meet strict requirements. These ensure you have the foundational knowledge and on-site experience necessary to pass this rigorous three-day assessment. You will need:

  • Evidence Prior Qualification(s): Proof of current registration or completion of the relevant electrical qualification. The prior qualifications will depend on the type of AM2 you are looking to complete.
  • Completed Readiness Checklist: A signed NET Self-Assessment Checklist. This document must be verified by you, your employer, and your training provider to confirm you are proficient in all assessment areas.
  • Maths & English (Apprentices Only): For those on the Apprenticeship Standard (AM2S), evidence of Level 2 Functional Skills or equivalent in English and Maths is required.
  • Photo ID: A valid, in-date government-issued photo ID (Passport or Driving Licence) must be presented at the assessment centre.

Beyond paperwork, we strongly recommend that candidates possess the following practical experience to ensure a successful first-time pass:

  1. Site Experience: Substantial “on-the-tools” experience in industrial and commercial environments, particularly with containment (conduit/trunking).
  2. Testing Proficiency: Full competence in carrying out an Initial Verification sequence and completing EIC paperwork without supervision.
  3. Regulatory Knowledge: An up-to-date understanding of BS 7671 (18th Edition) and the Building Regulations.
  4. Safe Isolation: The ability to perform a flawless safe isolation procedure. This is a safety-critical element where any mistake results in an immediate fail.
