AM2 Assessment

Duration: 8.5 – 10 hours

This is the core practical component of the assessment. You are required to install, terminate, and connect various wiring systems and equipment to a precise specification.

• Key Tasks: Installing lighting and power circuits, a three-phase distribution board with sub-circuits, and specialised systems such as central heating or data cabling.
• Standards: You must follow schematic drawings accurately and ensure all work meets the high workmanship standards required for an industrial or commercial setting.

Duration: 3.5 hours

Focusing on initial verification, you will perform the full sequence of “dead” and “live” tests on your installation. Using calibrated instruments and following IET Guidance Note 3, you must accurately record all results on an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) to prove the system is safe for energisation.

Duration: 30 minutes

Safety is reassessed here with a focus on individual circuits. You must demonstrate that you can isolate a specific part of a system, such as for equipment replacement, while the rest of the installation remains live, ensuring you follow the correct locking off and voltage-proving sequence every time.

Duration: 2 hours

In this section, you are presented with an installation containing pre-set electrical faults. You must use a logical, systematic process to identify the location and type of each fault (e.g., short circuit, open circuit, or high resistance). You will then propose the correct remedies and re-test to verify the fix.

Duration: 1 hour

This final section is an online, open-book exam. Rather than testing simple memory, it challenges your ability to apply the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), Building Regulations, and health and safety law to practical scenarios. You will have access to industry guides and must navigate them efficiently to find the correct technical solutions.

While all versions test safe isolation, installation, and testing to the same high industry benchmark, they are tailored to different career paths:

• AM2: The standard version for traditional City & Guilds 2357 NVQ candidates.
• AM2S: The End-Point Assessment for apprentices on the Installation/Maintenance Standard registered before Sept 2023.
• AM2S v1: The updated EPA for apprentices registered after Sept 2023, featuring extra containment and planning tasks.
• AM2E: Specifically for experienced workers completing the 2346 Installation/Maintenance route.
• AM2D: The End-Point Assessment for Domestic Electrician apprentices. It focuses on domestic scenarios and includes a scenario-based professional interview.
• AM2ED: The domestic equivalent of the AM2E, taken by experienced workers completing a Domestic Experienced Worker Assessment. It mirrors the AM2D practical content but excludes the interview.

• AM2S / AM2E: £965
• AM2S v1: £1,340

If you fail a specific section (e.g., Section B: Testing), you only need to re-sit that individual module, provided you do so within the timeframe allowed by NET.
