The Level 3 NVQ is a work-based portfolio evidencing real jobs over time. AM2 is the final practical assessment taken under controlled conditions. You build the portfolio first, then sit AM2 to confirm competence.
Yes. Final registration for the City & Guilds 2357 is 31 October 2026, with final certification by 31 December 2029. It is being replaced by the 5357 and 5393 (domestic only) routes.
If you register before the deadline you can complete under 2357 as normal, with nearly three years to finish your portfolio and AM2. If you are considering the NVQ, registering ahead of 31 October keeps you on the established route rather than the replacement.

The NVQ is assessed through an e-portfolio of evidence from real installations, so the pace is set by your job pipeline rather than by a timetable. Varied commercial and domestic work generates the required evidence far faster than repetitive work does. Assessment takes place on site across our Northolt, Luton, Basildon and Sittingbourne coverage.
The AM2 follows once your portfolio is complete and runs over three days at an independent approved centre.

Yes. The ECS Gold Card requires proven occupational competence, which in practice means the Level 3 NVQ and AM2.
Without it you may only qualify for a lower grade card, which limits the site work you can carry out unsupervised.

Yes. Once qualified you can apply to a Competent Persons Scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, allowing you to self-certify notifiable work.

The 2357 NVQ is for people working towards or holding the Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas. The 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment is for electricians with over five years of experience but no diplomas.
Both prove the same level of competence and both lead to an ECS Gold Card, but they get there differently. The Experienced Worker route recognises existing skills through portfolio evidence and on-site assessment, and finishes with the AM2E rather than the standard AM2.
