City & Guilds 5357 Level 3 Electrical NVQ

Detailed logs describing the tasks you performed on site, explaining how you applied technical knowledge and BS 7671 to meet specific unit criteria.

• Health & safety: risk assessments, method statements (RAMS) and work permits.
• Technical data: wiring diagrams, site plans, specifications and manufacturer’s instructions.
• Compliance: Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC), schedules of test results and material requisitions.

Signed statements from a supervisor, site manager or qualified electrician confirming your documented work was completed to a professional standard under relevant site conditions.

Your Logic4training assessor carries out at least one mandatory site visit, observing you working in real time to verify your practical skills, safety awareness and technical proficiency. You need to be engaged in site work that allows this observation to take place.

Evidence is uploaded through our digital portfolio system so you can track progress in real time. Once your assessor confirms all units are met, your portfolio clears the way for your AM2.

Yes. Both are recognised by the Joint Industry Board and both meet the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification. The 5357 is mapped to the ST0152 Installation and Maintenance Electrician standard, and completing it alongside the AM2 makes you eligible for the ECS Gold Card in exactly the same way the 2357 did.

They are the same qualification registered by different routes. The 5357-23 is for apprentices working towards the electrotechnical apprenticeship standard. The 5357-43 is the adult route for candidates outside an apprenticeship, which is the route Logic4training delivers for privately funded and employer-funded learners.

Yes. Once you have completed the 5357 and passed the AM2, you can apply for your ECS Gold Card.

The 2365 Level 3 Diploma is a centre-based qualification that teaches the theory and practical skills needed to carry out electrical work. The 5357 is a work-based qualification that proves you can apply that knowledge on a real job site. You cannot get an ECS Gold Card with the diploma alone. You need the NVQ and the AM2 to demonstrate occupational competence.

Most candidates at Logic4training will complete their portfolio within 2 years. The timeline is entirely dependent on your workload. If you are working on a variety of commercial and domestic projects, you will gather the required evidence for your units much faster.

No. The bridging assignment applied to the 2357 and has no equivalent in the 5357. If you already hold the 2365 or 8202, your centre completes a skills scan with you and claims assessment exemptions directly against the relevant 5357 assignments instead. Exemptions are only granted where the skills evidenced are current.

Partly. The portfolio of on-site evidence works in much the same way. The 5357 adds assignment-based assessments that are graded at pass, merit or distinction, and a closed-book examination with a pass mark of approximately 60%, taken with the IET Wiring Regulations available to you.

If you resit an assignment, the grade is capped at a pass.

No. Because the 5357 is a work-based qualification, you must be employed or working as a subcontractor in the electrical trade. You need to photograph your work, write reflective accounts of your tasks, and have an expert witness confirm your competence on site.

The AM2 is required to complete the qualification and achieve occupational competence, but its cost is not included in the standard 5357 fee. If you take Logic4training’s Platinum Electrical Package, one AM2 attempt is included.

Most of the qualification is completed remotely through our digital portfolio system, where you upload evidence from your workplace. You attend one of our centres in Northolt, Luton, Basildon or Sittingbourne for your initial profiling session, and for any assignments and examinations you have not been exempted from. Your assessor also visits you once on site for a direct observation.

To pass the 5357 you must show competence across different areas including containment, wiring and testing. If your current job is repetitive, our assessors identify the evidence gaps and advise on the specific tasks to seek out or the technical documentation you can provide to satisfy the criteria.

Holding the 5357 is a primary requirement for joining a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. Once you have the qualification and have joined a scheme, you are authorised to self-certify your work under Part P of the Building Regulations — essential for working as a self-employed domestic or commercial electrician.
