Legionella courses explained.
Responsible for water systems? These answers explain which legionella course matches your role.
The Approved Code of Practice L8 sets out what that means in practice, and while it does not name a specific qualification, training is the usual way an employer demonstrates competence, for managers and operatives alike. Lack of training is a recurring factor in legionella incidents and in the enforcement action that follows.
There is no fixed statutory renewal period for legionella training, but keeping knowledge current matters because guidance, British Standards and best practice all move. Many employers and accreditation schemes set their own refresher interval, so check what your organisation or main contractor expects.
Refresh through either the managers or operatives course, depending on your role.
That makes them right for landlords, housing associations, managing agents and the plumbers and heating engineers maintaining hot and cold water systems in homes. If you are responsible for evaporative cooling towers, industrial process water or complex healthcare systems, you will need specialist training instead.

Both courses lead to the LCL Awards Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment certificate, and cover risk assessment, water system disinfection using industry-approved methods, and the record keeping needed to demonstrate compliance under ACOP L8. That documentation is usually what an assessor asks to see.
Requirements differ between schemes, so confirm what yours accepts before booking.
