Back in May we introduced you to Josh Scott, the winner of our ‘Lifetime of Training’ competition. Now, three weeks into his new entrants’ programme, where he’ll ultimately qualify with a Level 2 plumbing NVQ Diploma and Gas ACS, we thought we’d catch up with him and see how he’s getting on.

Josh’s prize gives him a fantastic start in the BSE sector, with a place on our MLP and then ten year’s worth of further training, advice on starting out in his career, his own website and a year’s membership of Checkatrade.   Over to Josh…..

“I’m loving it so far!  I’ve started the first section of the course and it’s going really well. I’m here, five days a week for six weeks before I go on to my work placements where I start building the practical experience I need to qualify as a heating engineer. I’m really looking forward to that.

“It’s quite a drive every day, to and from Northolt from home, but so worth it. As soon as I arrive, I know I’m in the right place. Everyone here is so friendly and there’s everything you need to learn. The classrooms are kitted out well and the workshops are nice and clean.

“My tutor Matt is spot on. He started out as a gas apprentice for British Gas and then became a plumber before turning to teaching. It’s great to feel you’re learning from someone who’s got years of good experience behind them. There’s nothing he doesn’t know!

“There are three other lads on the course. They’re all a bit older than me, but we’re already a good team and support each other. We all come from different backgrounds. One lad used to work in IT, so it’s a real change for him. Matt is great at working out what we all need and if you get stuck he’s got the time to go over things with you – to help you understand.

“We tend to spend the mornings in the classroom learning the technical stuff and the theory; then we move into the workshops where we put what we’ve learnt into practice. In the first week we concentrated on the basic principles and there was a module on Health & Safety. This week we’ve been applying what we’ve learnt – straight into the tools and equipment.  You get a real sense of achievement when you’re actually doing it and you can already see everyone’s confidence growing.

“When I left school, I thought I wanted to go into the army and went to military college, but I realised it wasn’t for me. My whole family is in the trades and I think that’s where I got the bug. When I stopped my military training, inspired by working with my Dad for a bit, I did a tiling course and started my own business. I was keen to learn more skills and do more, so I’m really pleased to be putting my dreams into action.

“Learning how to do the job is clearly the most important part, but I’m grateful to have support from Logic with other areas of running a business too. Next week, I’ll be working with Harry Budd, the company’s Content Creator, who will be showing me how to build a social media presence. All that side of things is important these days, so watch this space!”

If, like Josh, you’d like to put your dreams of working in the BSE sector into reality, please get in touch with us and we can help. Training as a heating engineer is a good foundation and gives you the opportunity to set up in a rewarding career that can grow with you.
