Adele and Harry travelled from Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean to complete the LCL Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing & Heating at Logic4training. Over six weeks, they developed their plumbing skills and knowledge through a combination of practical training and classroom learning.
From tackling unfamiliar topics to building on existing experience, Adele and Harry share the challenges they faced, the skills they gained and how their training will support them in their work back on Ascension Island.

Learning New Skills and Overcoming Challenges
Adele decided to follow in her father’s footsteps by pursuing a career in plumbing. She found the course extremely worthwhile and a big eye-opener, being a woman in a male dominated field, and particularly enjoyed learning about cold water systems, plumbing terminology, and vented/unvented cylinders.
“It’s a big eye-opener, I would say, especially for a girl in a a male-dominated field, but it’s really interesting and it’s worth it, in my opinion.”
Coming from Ascension Island, a small volcanic Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, Adele found the Central Heating aspects of the course challenging, with there being no central heating on the Island. However, she praises her teacher, Colin, for helping her to break through these challenges by walking her through everything step-by-step and providing excellent support.
Building on Existing Skills and Knowledge
For Harry, a Fire Fighter on Ascension Island, the plumbing course was an opportunity to build on the plumbing skills he already had and gain a better understanding of the theory behind plumbing work:
“I’ve done a bit of plumbing previously on the island, but this has definitely shown me more about why I’m doing what I’m doing and yeah, I definitely think I’ve upgraded my skills.”
He especially enjoyed completing a full bathroom installation, which challenged him to think carefully and put his developing knowledge and practical skills into action.

Successful completion of the LCL Level 2 Diploma in the Installation & Maintenance of Plumbing & Heating Systems provides learners with the core knowledge and practical skills required to work effectively in the plumbing and heating industry. Graduates will be well-positioned to pursue roles such as a domestic plumber, heating engineer, or maintenance technician.
If you are looking to work on-site, you will also need to partake in the LCL Awards NVQ in Plumbing and Heating qualification. This course is a necessary requirement to apply for a JIB Plumbing CSCS card, a card which provides proof that a person can work on a construction site.

You will need to add the Level 2 Plumbing NVQ to the Level 2 Plumbing Diploma to register with a Competent Person Scheme. A CPS allows qualified tradespeople to self-certify that their work complies with Building Regulations.
What is the difference between the LCL L2 Diploma and the NVQ?
The LCL Level 2 Diploma is a classroom and workshop-based qualification that gives you the knowledge and skills to enter the plumbing trade. It qualifies you to work as a domestic plumber.
The Level 2 NVQ is a work-based qualification, typically completed on-site while working in the industry. Many learners progress to the NVQ after completing the diploma.
Will I be qualified to work on gas appliances after this course?
It depends on the package you take. To becoming Gas Safe Registered, we recommend our Gold or Platinum packages which include our Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP). These packages cover everything from classroom theory and hands-on training to portfolio building and final ACS assessments – the required steps before applying for Gas Safe registration. Can I do the course on weekends?
Yes, you can complete the course on either weekdays OR weekends. The weekday course takes 6 weeks to complete, whilst the weekend course takes roughly 4 and a half months.
