Tip #24: New careers for 2019 – Our Advice, Become a Plumber!

Plumbers are always in demand, particularly at this time of year when burst and frozen pipes are common place.   Whether you’re working in a related trade, or starting from scratch, a career in plumbing could be a good move for 2019.  

Where do I Start?

  If you know someone that’s already a plumber, talk to them – real-life experience is always the best.   They might be able to give you some work experience.   School and college leavers could consider a plumbing apprenticeship, a great way into the industry that will see you earn while you learn.   Apprenticeships aren’t just for under 25s, however, anyone can become an apprentice, but you might have to contribute towards the cost of training if you’re over 25.  

What Qualifications do I Need?

  GCSEs in Maths, English and Science (or the equivalent) are baseline requirements, but you should regard these as the bare minimum.   Not all colleges and employers will have the same criteria.   Some UK colleges offer plumbing courses, which can help you land an entry-level trainee position in a company, or an apprenticeship.   To start working as a qualified plumber, many companies will require you to hold an industry recognised qualification, like a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating.   Want to know more about becoming a plumber? What about Heating?

  If you want to do more than the plumbing – after all, the pipes are just one part of a system, it makes an excellent base to upskill.   We conducted a survey at the end of this year which showed that plumbing was the most common starting point for installers wishing to add to their skill set, with the majority (over 73%) moving into gas.   To do this you need to complete your ACS and become Gas Safe Registered.   As plumbers have eminently transferable skills, there are top-up courses available.   We offer an experienced work route entry-level Domestic Gas Installer programme designed specifically for candidates such as plumbers.   Plumbing’s also a good base for other heating technologies, including renewables and oil heating.   In general, multi-skilling is a good idea – in our survey, over 75% of respondents stated increased profits as a result of upskilling (a lucky 4%’s profits rose by 90%!)   For more information about our multi-skilled survey results, click here.   That’s it from Logic4training for 2018, have a great Christmas and a very happy New Year.
