Yes. Renewables courses are designed for experienced installers adding low-carbon skills to an existing trade, not for complete beginners.

Heat pump and low temperature heating courses assume you already work in plumbing and heating, usually with an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent plus water safety qualifications. Solar PV, EV charging and battery storage assume an electrical background with the relevant wiring regulations qualification.

If you are starting from scratch, begin with a new entrant route in plumbing or electrical first, then add renewables once you are qualified.

Our renewables qualifications are awarded by LCL Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, and Logic4training is an approved centre.

Installation work is governed by MCS, the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, which certifies both installers and products for low-carbon technologies. MCS certification is what allows customers to claim Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants, administered by Ofgem. Electrical elements of solar and storage work remain subject to BS 7671 and Part P.

MCS certifies businesses as well as individuals, so your company undergoes assessment alongside your own qualifications.

MCS certification requires a recognised qualification in the specific technology you want to install, alongside the underpinning trade qualifications for your discipline.

For heat pumps that typically means an air source or ground source qualification plus water safety and low temperature heating competence. For solar PV or battery storage it means the relevant technology qualification alongside your electrical qualifications. MCS certifies the business as well as the individual, so your company will also need to demonstrate quality management processes and undergo assessment.

Yes. Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants can only be claimed against installations carried out by an MCS certified installer, which means holding the relevant heat pump qualification.

The scheme is what funds much of the current domestic heat pump market, so certification is effectively the entry ticket to that work rather than an optional extra. Homeowners cannot apply directly, as the installer applies on their behalf, which makes certified installers the ones customers have to come to.

The technology qualifications themselves generally do not expire, but the certification and supporting qualifications around them do.

MCS certification is subject to ongoing assessment of your business rather than a one-off sign-off, so it has to be maintained. Qualifications you hold alongside your renewables training also have their own cycles: HWSS and Water Regulations require reassessment every five years, and electrical installers need to stay current with the latest wiring regulations amendment.

Most renewables courses run over one to five days, depending on the technology and whether you already hold the underpinning qualifications.

These are upskill courses for working installers rather than long programmes, so they are designed to keep you off the tools for as little time as possible. Where several qualifications are needed for a full MCS route, they can usually be booked as consecutive blocks.

Yes. The UK Government's Heat Training Grant provides up to £500 towards heat pump training, and Logic4training is an approved provider.

The grant is managed by the Midlands Net Zero Hub and is currently available until at least March 2027. It is open to sole traders and engineers working for small and medium-sized businesses registered with a competent person scheme, including Gas Safe, NAPIT and OFTEC. It applies to heat pump training specifically rather than to the full renewables range, so solar PV, battery storage and EV charging fall outside it.
