Logic4training’s Level 3 Initial Inspection & Testing qualification is an industry-recognised pathway for experienced electricians who conduct or supervise the initial verification and certification of new electrical installations.

Logic4training runs the industry-recognised LCL Awards Level 3 RQF Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations. This Level 3 LCL Awards qualification is recognised by the Joint Industry Board (JIB), the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) and the Competent Person Schemes for electrical operatives.

This qualification, along with the LCL Awards Level 3 Award in Periodic Inspection, Testing & Certification of Electrical Installations qualification, forms the Inspection and Testing suite of qualifications. By splitting out the qualifications, electricians can specialise in either Initial Verification & Certification or Periodic Inspection of electrical installations. Alternatively, electricians can attend both courses when the appropriate level of on-site experience in each sector has been achieved.

This course provides the comprehensive knowledge and proof of competence required to carry out initial inspection and testing You will transition from understanding legal frameworks to performing hands-on assessments.

Gain a comprehensive understanding of the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) and how they mandate safety in the workplace. We focus heavily on the Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and Guidance Note 3 (GN3), ensuring you understand the industry standards for inspection, testing, and maintenance.

Learn the systematic approach required for the initial verification of new installations. This includes the sequence of tests required to ensure an installation is safe before it is put into service, as well as the requirements for periodic reporting on existing systems.

Develop a keen eye for detail through structured inspection techniques. You will learn what to look for during a visual inspection to identify defects, deterioration, and non-compliance issues that could compromise electrical safety.

You’ll learn how to use the multi-function testers to carry out essential electrical tests, including:

Continuity of protective conductors and bonding.
Insulation resistance.
Polarity and Earth electrode testing.
Earth fault loop impedance (Zs) and RCD testing.

A critical part of the process is the professional handover. You will learn the correct procedure for the completion of the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), ensuring all findings are documented accurately and legally.

Practical Assessment

A timed practical assessment where you must demonstrate the correct sequence of testing and the accurate completion of certification on a simulated installation.

Written Theory Exams

You will complete two short-response written exam papers. These are open-book, allowing you to reference your regulations and guidance notes. These assessments are completed as an integral part of the course.

What are the entry requirements for the initial inspection & testing course?

Candidates looking to do this course should hold City & Guilds 2382 18th Edition Wiring Regulations or equivalent, and must have a practical working knowledge of both domestic and commercial electrical installations, including 3 phase installations.

Candidates should also have on-site experience of initial verification and certification of electrical installations, using suitable test equipment and the completion of the relevant forms as per BS7671, including Minor Works Electrical Installation Certificates and Full Electrical Installation Certificates.
