CCN1 is the core domestic gas safety assessment, and the foundation every domestic gas engineer works from. It covers the fundamentals such as tightness testing, pipework, ventilation, flueing, combustion performance and emergency procedures on natural gas in domestic properties.
On its own it does not let you work on appliances. Appliance categories are added on top of it, and the Gas Safe Register lists only the categories you actually hold.

Yes. You can be reassessed up to six months before your ACS certificate expires without losing any validity, because the unused time carries over onto the new certificate.
