What does a plumber do?

Plumbers mostly carry out the installation, maintenance and repair of water, heating and drainage systems, though the work varies across sectors. Domestic plumbers handle work in homes, such as replacing taps, fitting showers and running pipework. Commercial plumbers work with larger-scale systems in commercial or public properties. Renewable plumbers specialise in technologies like heat pumps and solar thermal. Many plumbers start in domestic work and upskill into commercial or renewable work over time.

The Bronze package delivers the LCL Awards Level 2 Diploma in the Installation & Maintenance of Plumbing & Heating Systems. Silver adds a Level 2 NVQ and the WRAS Water Regulations qualification, both required for a JIB-PMES CSCS card. Gold combines the Diploma with the Gas Managed Learning Programme, giving the on-site experience and Gas ACS certificates needed to become Gas Safe registered. Platinum combines all of the above for fully competent plumber and gas engineer status, with a JIB-PMES CSCS card, Approved Plumber Status and Gas Safe registration.

How much do plumbers earn?

The average salary for a plumber in the UK is roughly £33,285 per year, higher than the UK average of around £31,000. Earnings depend on experience, location, qualifications and specialism, and whether you are employed or self-employed. Most self-employed plumbers earn more than the average, with some earning up to £350 per day.

How long does it take to become a plumber?

The Bronze package takes 6 weeks. Silver takes 6 weeks plus the NVQ on-site portfolio. Gold takes 10 weeks plus the on-site gas portfolio. Platinum takes 10 weeks plus both NVQ and gas portfolios. Portfolio timings vary from person to person. All courses are full-time, starting at 8.30am and finishing around 4.00pm, with the centre open from 8.00am.

What qualifications do I need to become a plumber?

There are technically no mandatory qualifications, but best practice is to gain a Level 2 Plumbing & Heating Diploma as the recognised entry-level qualification, then a Level 2 (or 3) NVQ in Plumbing if you want to work on-site or commercially, which lets you apply for a JIB Plumbing CSCS card. Anyone carrying out gas work must be Gas Safe registered, achieved through ACS assessments including CCN1 and CENWAT, which can be gained via a Gas Managed Learning Programme. You can later add heat pump upskilling to move into renewable heating. All packages also include online Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling, Fire Safety, Working at Heights and Working Safely certificates.

What package is best for me?

Choose Bronze if you want to become a domestic plumber. Choose Silver if you also want to work on-site in a commercial environment, as the NVQ lets you apply for a CSCS/JIB card. Choose Gold if you also want to work on gas, as it adds the Gas Managed Learning Programme towards Gas Safe registration. Choose Platinum to work across both plumbing and gas, combining the Diploma, NVQ and Gas MLP for domestic and commercial plumbing as well as domestic gas.

At what centres can I do this course?

The plumbing elements of the packages are available at the Northolt and Sittingbourne centres. For the Gold or Platinum packages, the gas elements can be completed at Northolt, Luton, Basildon or Sittingbourne.

Are there any entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but candidates are assessed to check their suitability. A good understanding of maths and English is essential.

Can I do the course on weekends?

Yes. The Plumbing Diploma and Gas Managed Learning Programme can be completed on weekends at the Northolt centre. On weekends the Plumbing Diploma takes roughly four and a half months and the Gas Managed Learning Programme takes around three months. The gas portfolio timing still depends on the individual.

How many people are there per course?

Classes have a maximum of 8 people. Class sizes are kept small so you have more contact time with your trainer.

Are plumbers in demand?

Yes. The construction industry continues to grow and the trades face a skills gap driven by an ageing workforce, fewer apprenticeships and low completion rates, the loss of EU workers, perception problems, lack of diversity, a digital skills deficit and economic and supply chain pressures. Existing buildings also need ongoing maintenance and upgrades, and the push towards sustainability and energy efficiency is driving demand for modern systems and renewable technologies, all of which keeps demand for plumbers steady.

Can I join a Competent Person Scheme?

On completing the Plumbing NVQ you can apply for a JIB Plumbing CSCS card and the Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme (WIAPS). On the Gold and Platinum packages, after successfully completing the Gas Managed Learning Programme you can and must apply to the Gas Safe Register to work on domestic gas systems.

Can I just do the plumbing NVQ?

Yes. If you are an experienced plumber who holds an alternative recognised plumbing qualification, or who has at least three years of industry experience but no formal qualification, you can take the Level 2 Plumbing NVQ on its own.

Can I just learn gas?

Yes. If you want to learn gas and have little to no experience you can follow a dedicated gas route, though it is worth considering what you can offer future clients and employers. If you have at least two years of plumbing experience or a related trade such as kitchen fitting, there is a specific route to become a gas engineer.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. Logic4training has partnered with OMNI Retail Finance so you can spread the cost of the course. Let your course advisor know you want to spread the cost and they can help you start the process.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

On your first day you receive your own plumbing tool kit, which you bring in daily during the Plumbing Diploma unless your trainer says otherwise, along with steel toe-capped boots for the workshop. For the Gas Managed Learning Programme all tools and equipment are provided, though candidates may bring their own test equipment if they wish after checking beforehand.

Do I need to buy my own textbooks?

No. Logic4training supplies reading material and textbooks on the first day of attendance. It is a good idea to bring your own pens, highlighters and sticky notes.

How to Become a Plumber in the UK

To become a qualified plumber in the UK, you need to complete a Level 2 Plumbing Diploma, and ideally hold a Water Regulations qualification. If you want to work as a plumber on-site, in commercial environments, you will also need to hold a Level 2 Plumbing NVQ.

How to become a plumber without an apprenticeship

You don’t need any experience or previous qualifications to become a plumber. Our plumbing packages take you from a complete beginner to a qualified plumber and are designed for career changers and adult learners.

You will start with the Level 2 Plumbing Diploma, the recognised entry-level qualification for the trade. From there, you choose how far to take your training:

Complete your training

Here comes the best bit! On your start date, you’ll come into the centre and start your training, working towards completing Logic4training’s plumbing course to earn an LCL Awards Level 2 Plumbing Diploma. Training includes theory and practical tasks, covering central heating, cold and hot water systems. The course also covers electrical safety related to plumbing and heating systems and will take 6 weeks to complete.

For those completing the Silver, Gold and Platinum packages, you will move on to your plumbing NVQ level 2 or gas training. If you choose a package that includes the gas elements, please note that these can be done at any of our four centres.

Need to speak to our team?

Plumbers are mostly carrying out installation, maintenance, and repair work of water, heating, and drainage systems. However, this can vary due to the industry being split into different work settings/sectors.

There are domestic plumbers who look after all the work required in homes. This includes replacing taps, fitting showers and running the necessary pipework to the appliances so they work correctly.
Then there are commercial plumbers. Commercial plumbers work with large-scale systems in commercial properties or public areas that require larger pipework and appliances.
Finally, there are renewable plumbers. Like the name suggests, renewable plumbers specialise in renewable technologies and practices such as heat pumps and solar thermal systems.

It’s important to know that whilst there are different plumbing sectors, it doesn’t mean that a plumber specifically works in just one of the mentioned sectors. Plumbers typically start off as domestic plumbers and then upskill themselves to be able to work as commercial or renewable plumbers, whilst still completing domestic jobs.

Bronze Package: LCL Awards Level 2 Diploma in the Installation & Maintenance of Plumbing & Heating Systems. This qualification provides candidates with the basic essentials of plumbing and is a solid foundation for entry to the workplace or further training.

Silver Package: The silver package adds a Level 2 NVQ element to the Diploma, ideal for candidates with an onsite location to complete ‘real world’ tasks. This programme also covers the WRAS Water Regulations qualification. Demonstration of experience and WRAS are both required to apply for a JIB-PMES CSCS blue card for skilled operatives.

Gold Package: Our gold package combines the Level 2 Plumbing Diploma with Logic4training’s Managed Learning Programme (MLP) for Domestic Gas Heating Installers, providing the perfect starting point for candidates looking to go from plumbing to gas installation. On completion of the MLP, you will have achieved the onsite experience and Gas ACS certificates, necessary to become a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Platinum Package: Combining all the training of our bronze, silver and gold packages, this comprehensive programme, will give you the skills, experience and qualifications to trade as a fully competent plumber and gas engineer, with a JIB-PMES CSCS blue card for skilled operatives, Approved Plumber Status and Gas Safe registration.

Bronze Plumbing Package

If you are looking to become a domestic plumber, our bronze package is for you. With the Level 2 Diploma in the Installation & Maintenance of Plumbing & Heating Systems, you will gain the necessary understanding and practical skills needed to work as a domestic plumber.

Silver Plumbing Package

The silver package is the best option for those who also want to work on-site in a commercial environment. The inclusion of the NVQ will allow you to apply for your CSCS/JIB card. Once you have your CSCS/JIB card, you will be able to work as a commercial plumber.

Gold Plumbing Package

If you know that you will also want to work on gas, our gold package is the package for you. Our gold package has been designed for individuals who want to work as a domestic plumber and gas engineer. Following your plumbing training, you will move on to our gas Managed Learning Programme, where you will undertake the necessary gas training to become competent when working with gas and work towards completing your gas ACS assessments. Upon successful completion of the Managed Learning Programme, you will be able to apply to the Gas Safe Register.

Platinum Plumbing Package

Our platinum package is perfect for anyone aiming to work in both the plumbing and gas industries. It includes the plumbing Diploma, plumbing NVQ and gas Managed Learning Programme and is our all-in-one package that covers domestic and commercial plumbing as well as domestic gas, equipping you with industry-recognized qualifications and practical skills for a successful career in these trades.

In 2025, the average salary for a plumber in the UK is roughly £33,285 per year, which is higher than the UK average salary of around £31,000. There are a number of factors that can affect how much a plumber earns, such as:

All our courses are full-time. Courses start at 8.30 am and usually finish at around 4.00 pm. You will be advised on your first day at the centre if there are any changes to these times. The centre is open from 8.00 am, and there is tea & coffee awaiting.

To become a plumber in the UK, technically you don’t need any qualifications but, it is best practice to earn the following qualifications:

Level 2 Plumbing and Heating Diploma: This is the recognised entry-level qualification for the trade, giving you the core skills and understanding needed to begin working as a plumber.
NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plumbing: An NVQ Level 2 in plumbing is needed if you want to work on-site or in a commercial environment, as it allows you to apply for your JIB Plumbing CSCS Card. For those taking the apprenticeship route, progressing to the Level 3 NVQ can be beneficial. At this stage, you’ll usually cover gas training alongside plumbing, opening up more career opportunities.
- JIB Plumbing CSCS Card: To access most building sites, you’ll need a JIB Plumbing CSCS card. This demonstrates both your technical competence and health & safety awareness. A Level 2 NVQ in Plumbing and Heating is required before you can apply.
Gas Safe Registration: Anyone carrying out gas work must be registered with Gas Safe. To apply, you’ll need to have achieved your ACS gas assessments, including CCN1 and CENWAT qualifications. This can be achieved by completting a Gas Managed Learning Programme
- Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP): This is a faster route into working with gas when compared with NVQ Level 3 qualifications. It can be taken as part of our plumbing training packages or as a standalone course.
Heat Pump Upskill Qualifications: Once you’ve achieved your Level 2 NVQ in Plumbing and Heating, you can choose to upskill with heat pump training, allowing you to expand into the renewable heating sector.

After successful completion of the Plumbing & Heating Packages, you will gain the following qualifications and certificates:

Asbestos Awareness – online course certificate

The Plumbing elements of the packages are available at our Northolt & Sittingbourne Centres.

If you are looking to complete the Gold or Platinum Package, the Gas elements can be carried out at our Northolt, Luton, Basildon, or Sittingbourne Centres.

There are no entry requirements for this course, but we will assess candidates to check their suitability. A good understanding of maths and English is essential.

Yes, it is possible to complete these courses on weekends. The Plumbing Diploma and Gas Managed Learning Programme can be completed on weekends at our Northolt Centre. The Plumbing Diploma would take roughly 4 and a half months to complete and the Gas Managed Learning Programme would take 3 months.

There would be no change to the gas portfolio as this depends on the individual.

Classes can have a maximum of 8 people. We like to keep our class sizes small, so that you have more contact time with your trainer.

Yes, plumbers are in high demand due to several reasons.

Furthermore, the emphasis on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency has led to the installation of modern plumbing systems and renewable technologies, requiring skilled plumbers to handle their installation and maintenance.

The combination of these factors ensures a steady demand for plumbers in the job market. Overall, we all have plumbing in our homes and businesses which needs maintaining and repairing in the event of an emergency.

Upon completing the Plumbing NVQ, you will be able to apply for a JIB Plumbing CSCS card, as well as the Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme (WIAPS).

For those on the Gold and Platinum Packages, upon successfully completing your Gas Managed Learning Programme, you will be able and need to apply to the Gas Safe Register to work on domestic gas systems.

We understand that being able to spread the cost of the course is an appealing option, so we have teamed up with OMNI Retail Finance to make this possible. When speaking to your course advisor, let them know that you want to spread the course cost, and they can help you start the process. More information can be found here.

On your first day, you will receive your own plumbing tool kit. While completing the Plumbing Diploma, you will need to bring it in every day unless your trainer says otherwise. Also, you will need to bring hard steel toe-capped boots for when you are in the workshop.

When working towards completing your Gas Managed Learning Programme, you do not need to bring in any tools. All tools and equipment are provided during this course. In some circumstances, candidates may bring their own test equipment if they so desire, but please check beforehand.

Logic4training will supply reading material and textbooks on the first day of attendance; however, it is a good idea to bring in pens, highlighters, and sticky notes.
