The City and Guilds 2365 Level 2 Diploma has no entry requirements and is designed for complete beginners and career changers, so you can start with no electrical background at all. It is classroom and workshop based, so you do not need a job in the trade to begin.

That changes at NVQ stage. The Level 3 NVQ is a work-based assessment, so you must be employed or subcontracting in electrical installation with consistent access to site work. You cannot complete it while unemployed, which is why the qualifications are usually taken in order: diplomas first, then find work as an improver, then the NVQ.

Our electrical qualifications are awarded by City & Guilds and LCL Awards, both Ofqual-regulated awarding organisations. Logic4training is an approved centre of both awarding bodies.

The work is governed by BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, alongside Part P of the Building Regulations for domestic work. Competent Person Schemes such as NICEIC and NAPIT are government-authorised to let registered electricians self-certify notifiable work. The AM2 is assessed independently by NET, and ECS Gold Cards are issued by the JIB.

It depends where you are starting from. If you are new to the trade, begin with the City and Guilds 2365 Level 2 Diploma. If you are already working in electrical installation, the right first course is usually the one your next job or card application requires.

For new entrants, the full route is Level 2 Diploma, Level 3 Diploma, 18th Edition, Level 3 NVQ and the AM2. Holding all five is what lets you apply for an ECS Gold Card. Our electrical packages bundle these into Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum routes so you are not booking them one at a time.

For working electricians, the 18th Edition is the most common starting point, since it is required for Competent Person Scheme membership and for an ECS Gold Card. If you already hold it and have your Level 3 Diploma, the Level 3 NVQ is the step that makes you a fully qualified electrician.

Around 16 weeks of in-centre training, plus 6 to 18 months on site to complete your NVQ portfolio.

The classroom stages are relatively quick. The Level 2 Diploma takes 7 weeks, the Level 3 Diploma 6 weeks and the 18th Edition 3 days. Our Platinum electrical package covers 16 weeks in centre before the on-site stage begins.

The Level 3 NVQ is what sets the overall pace, since it is assessed through evidence of real work rather than in a classroom. Most candidates complete their portfolio in 6 to 18 months, and how quickly depends entirely on your workload. Varied commercial and domestic projects generate the evidence far faster than repetitive work does.

After that, the AM2 is a 3-day assessment and the ECS Gold Card application takes a further 6 to 8 weeks. If you are already working in the trade, individual upskill courses such as 18th Edition or inspection and testing take days rather than months.

The ECS Gold Card is the ID card that proves you're a fully qualified electrician on UK construction sites, recognised through the CSCS partnership and is why it's often called the "CSCS Gold Card". To get one, you need the Level 3 Electrical NVQ, the AM2 assessment and the current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.

ECS stands for the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme, the card scheme for the electrical industry and the electrotechnical partner of CSCS so electricians apply through ECS rather than CSCS directly. Alongside your qualifications, you'll also need to meet the ECS health, safety and environmental assessment requirement.

The Gold Card matters because most main contractors won't allow you on site without the right card, and "Installation Electrician" Gold Card status is the benchmark employers and agencies look for.

For most people, yes, provided you follow the route through to the NVQ. The diplomas alone will not make you a qualified electrician.

What the full qualification set unlocks is the ECS Gold Card, which lets you work unsupervised on commercial and industrial sites, and membership of a Competent Person Scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, which lets you self-certify your own work under Part P rather than notifying building control on every job. That is what makes self-employment viable.

Demand is also shifting in the trade's favour. EV charging, battery storage and solar all sit on top of a Level 3 electrical background, so the core qualification opens onto specialisms rather than being an endpoint. The honest caveat is that stopping halfway is what makes it not worth it. If you complete the diplomas but never get site work to finish the NVQ, you will not reach Gold Card standard. Being clear about how you will get that on-site experience is the single biggest factor in whether the investment pays off.
