Plumbing courses explained.
Not sure where to start or what to add next? These quick answers explain the plumbing routes and who each one suits.
Our plumbing range covers four categories, spanning full qualifications and shorter upskill courses.
Plumbing Diploma is the LCL Awards Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, the foundation qualification for the trade. Plumbing NVQ is the work-based Level 2 NVQ that proves competence on live jobs and leads to a JIB Plumbing CSCS card and WIAPS approval.
Water Safety covers the two short qualifications most working plumbers need: Unvented Hot Water (G3) for cylinder installation and WRAS Water Regulations for work connected to the public supply. Legionella covers control of legionella risk in domestic and small commercial water systems, with separate courses for managers and operatives.
Completely new to the trade? Start with our new entrant plumbing packages instead, which combine the Diploma with the qualifications and on-site experience you need to start working.

The courses on this page are for experienced plumbers and heating engineers adding or renewing specific qualifications. If you are starting out, our new entrant packages are the right place to begin.
Short courses such as Water Regulations and Unvented G3 assume you are already working in the trade and have the underpinning knowledge to build on. Complete beginners should start with a structured programme instead.
See How to Become a Plumber for the full new entrant route, or speak to our team if you are unsure which side you fall on.

Our plumbing qualifications are awarded by LCL Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, and Logic4training is a primary approved centre.
Plumbing is not a licensed trade in the same way as gas, but the work is governed by the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and by Part G of the Building Regulations for unvented hot water. WRAS approves compliant fittings and publishes the guidance the industry works to, and WIAPS operates the Approved Plumber Scheme.
Logic4training and our courses are recognised by WRAS and CIPHE, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering.

Some do, some do not. The Diploma, NVQ and Water Regulations are permanent qualifications that never expire. Unvented hot water (G3) and Legionella certificates are valid for five years and need reassessment.
The Level 2 Plumbing Diploma and the Level 2 NVQ are one-off qualifications. Once achieved they are yours for good, and neither needs renewing to stay valid. The same applies to Water Regulations, though many plumbers still refresh it voluntarily as guidance moves on.
Unvented G3 is the one to watch, since keeping it in date is what maintains your ability to self-certify through a Competent Person Scheme, and it is checked by insurers, manufacturers and building control. Legionella runs on the same five-year cycle, with some employers and duty holders setting a shorter refresher interval of their own.
Cards are separate from qualifications. A JIB Plumbing CSCS card has its own renewal cycle even though the NVQ behind it does not expire.

Yes. Unvented hot water storage systems are covered by Part G3 of the Building Regulations, and installation must be carried out by a competent person holding the relevant qualification.
Without it you cannot self-certify the work, and installations may not be accepted by building control, manufacturers or insurers. The qualification covers system design, safety devices, discharge pipework, commissioning and maintenance.
Our Unvented G3 Hot Water Course covers this in a single day for experienced plumbers and heating engineers.

Any plumber or heating engineer working on water systems connected to the public supply, and anyone applying to join an approved plumber scheme.
The course covers the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, backflow prevention and fluid risk categories, contamination risks and the requirements around notification. It is frequently requested by water companies, main contractors and clients as evidence of competence.
See our Water Regulations Training Course for dates and content.

It depends on your role. The managers course is for those with responsibility for water systems and legionella risk management, while the operatives course is for engineers carrying out the work on site.
Managers cover duty holder responsibilities, risk assessment and written control schemes under ACOP L8. Operatives focus on practical control measures, temperature monitoring, flushing regimes and record keeping. Larger organisations often send staff on both, split by role.
Compare both on our Legionella training courses page.

Yes. The NVQ is designed for people already working on site, and is assessed largely through evidence of the work you do day to day.
You build a portfolio of workplace evidence alongside assessment, which is why it suits experienced plumbers who need a recognised qualification to match the work they are already competent in, often to satisfy a client, contractor or card scheme requirement.
See our Plumbing NVQ courses, or the Plumbing Diploma if you need the underpinning knowledge qualification first.

The Level 2 Diploma and Level 2 NVQ sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, which is what allows the NVQ to be used for a JIB Plumbing CSCS card and, alongside Water Regulations, for WIAPS Approved Plumber status. Unvented G3 is accepted by Competent Person Schemes for self-certification.
Logic4training is a primary LCL Awards approved centre and is also accredited by WRAS, CIPHE and City & Guilds. We have been delivering building services training for over 24 years across our Northolt, Luton, Basildon and Sittingbourne centres.
