2019’s New Year Training Tips for Tradespeople

The New Year always feels like a reset from a tough previous 12 months, or a follow up to a successful year gone by in your chosen trade.   Whether you made a list of goals or not, it’s useful to look at where you are in your career.   Our Upskill Survey shows how trades people develop their skillsets and the benefits this has to their business, such as enhanced work satisfaction, larger customer base and an increased hourly rate attributed to being multi-skilled.   Whatever your trade, you might find that you are ready to take the next step up, your mind need to renew a qualification or go multi skilled.   Here are our New Year training tips for tradespeople.                                                                  

Training for Gas Engineers

  Gas engineers need to look at the year ahead and make sure their qualifications are in check.   It’s a good idea to find out when your CCN1 is due for renewal and get yourself booked in at your nearest Logic4training centre well in advance as re-assessments fill up quickly.   Remember renewals can be booked up to 6 months before expiry and any time left will be added to your renewals.   If you are an experienced engineer, registered with Gas Safe for at least 6 months and are looking to upgrade your skills you could consider the following:  

• Commercial Upskill – Train and gain a CODNCO1 qualification along with ICPN1, CIGA1 & CORT1 and start working as a commercial gas engineer.
• Catering Changeover – Train and gain CODC1 & COCATA1 qualifications enabling you to then gain COMCAT appliances to work on gas powered catering appliances.
• LPG Changeover – Train and gain CONGLP1 and appliances enabling you to work on LPG installations and appliances.

 

Training for Electricians & Electrical Apprentices

  2019 has seen the new 18^th edition published meaning electricians, domestic electrical installers and any other relevant qualified professionals will need to work to new standards.   All electricians will need to update their qualifications to demonstrate an understanding of the changes which have been introduced to improve safety standards in electrical work.   Existing electricians who currently hold the 17^th Edition (AMD3) qualification can upgrade their qualification by taking a one day 18^th Edition Wiring Regulations upgrade course.   For everyone else including new learners, we recommend the full City & Guilds 18^th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382-18) training course.   The course is designed for electricians, as well as other building services engineers such as gas installers, kitchen/bathroom fitters, plumbers and builders who are required to complete some domestic electrical work, such as wiring in a boiler or shower.   Another course that may be of interest to operatives undergoing their Electrical Advanced Apprenticeship is our AM2 assessment.  

Training for Plumbers

  If you are a plumber you may be looking to gain your gas qualifications for the first time.   Logic4training’s Domestic Gas Heating Installer course for experienced trades fits the bill.   It’s a hands-on, intensive, 20 day course for plumbers with at least 2 years of experience.   You must attend an open day first to prove you have the relevant experience for the course but after that you will be trained on core gas skills before undertaking a CCN1 assessment for the first time.   Plumbers may also want to undertake our Legionella treatment course, which aims to provide anyone working on water systems with knowledge from the HSE’s L8 code of practice and guidance.  

Multi-Skillers

  For tradespeople who want to specialise in more than just their chosen trade our new entrant courses can provide you with electrical or gas skills with no prior experience.  

• New Entrant Domestic Electrical Installer Course (NEDEI) – We think this course is great for kitchen or bathroom fitters, or even gas engineers who want to carry out the odd bit of domestic electrical work.
• Oil Firing Introductory Course (OFT50) – Gas engineers (or plumbers) may want to expand their understanding from just gas heating to another fuel such as oil.
• Heat Pumps – If you hold a valid CCN1, OFTEC Oil, HETAS or Level 2/3 NVQ or SVQ in plumbing / heating & ventilation / gas / oil – Installation and Maintenance qualification you could learn how to install and maintain heat pumps (both ground & air source).
• F-Gas – Learn how to install and maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning with logic4training’s City & Guilds 2079 course.
