The short answer is: it depends. We offer two training courses for candidates who are looking to become a gas engineer. One is for new entrants with no previous experience. The other one for those who are more familiar with the sector – perhaps someone who’s been working as a plumber and wants to add a gas qualification to their skill-set in order to work on domestic heating systems and gas appliances as gas engineer.

Gas training for new entrants to become a gas engineer

On this course, we start from scratch. It’s a fully comprehensive managed learning programme (MLP), jam-packed with all our learners need to become a legally qualified domestic gas engineer.

There’s a balanced mix of classroom learning and plenty of time in the workshop. Candidates can practice the theory on a range of different boiler rigs.

There’s a portfolio element to the course, where each learner is assigned a mentor; a professional engineer. They work alongside the engineer, in the real world, to gain the experience and confidence they’ll need once working.

The course takes 8 weeks to complete, and price starts at £3,495+ VAT.

Gas training for experienced trades

This training package is designed for operatives with at least two years’ experience in a related trade. For those looking to extend their offering by gaining the relevant gas qualifications to join Gas Safe Register.

Because these learners are more familiar with the basics, the course is shorter – just 20 days and the price starts at £2,996 + VAT. For more information, please click here

Once learners have completed either MLP, they are ready to take their Gas ACS training and assessment, which must be achieved before they can sign up with Gas Safe Register and find work. The cost of CCN1 and CENWAT training and assessment is covered by the fee already paid for the new entrants’ package.

If you’re already a gas installer looking for ACS re-assessment you can find out the cost, here. There are also individual appliance modules available for existing gas engineers.

High level rewards

The demand for new gas engineers is high. Largely because most engineers working at the moment are reaching retirement age and a stock of new entrants is required to fill the skills-gap.

This demand is reflected in the rates of pay that gas engineers with the relevant qualifications can attract. According to the ONS (Office for National Statistics). New gas engineers can expect a starting salary of around £32,500 – which is well above the national UK average salary of £25,844. Research shows that gas engineers are amongst the highest earners in the trades.

What about the future for a gas engineer?

There’s an exciting future for those training in gas today, with the opportunity to develop an interesting and varied life-long career as the UK prepares itself for a low carbon energy future.

It’s very likely that hydrogen or hydrogen/gas mixes will replace gas in both old and new boilers in years to come. Gas engineers are also equipped with the necessary transferable skills to take on the installation of ASHP (Air Source Heat Pumps)

Investing in a gas engineer course today will give you job security and an interesting and rewarding career for years to come.
